    It's a '39 Ford Standard, not a '38.

    Cool picture!

Yup, '39 Standard. Very similar to '38.

I thought the 39 had Windshield wipers @ the cowl not the roof!

Ah, thanks. I had a 39, but it was a PU. Very different grill from the sedan.

  6. 40 was the first year for wipers int he cowl, unless it was a convertible

The way i always tell the diffrence between a 38 deluxe and a 39 standard from a far are the hood sides...
The 38 has longer vents down the side.

    That's how I tell the difference between a 39 deluxe and a 40 standard.

It does seem to have a bit more "flash" for a standard (side trim). . . but it does have the short vent on the hood sides, where the 38 had the long ones? If there was a shot of the back, the tail lights could be a tell. . . Possibly a '39 standard that somebody added '38 deluxe trim to?

'39 Standard has the short vents. Wipers on the cowl won't work with windshields that open.

I always thought the rear edge of the grill on '38 standards had the round pointing forward and the '39 had it pointing backward. But then again I have never owned either car ( my '39 coupe was a deluxe), so I might have that backward.

I think you may have that backward. It seems that the evolution from the 37 to the 38 standard to the 38 deluxe would put the round pointing backward. Just a thought.

  17. That is, without a doubt, a 1939 Ford standard tudor sedan

The "candy-cane" stainless strips on the hood are a 39 only thing. It does have a plated windshield frame and dual wipers which is more Deluxe then standard though...

My brother had a '39 Standard coupe and I had a '38 Deluxe coupe and they both had the same sheet metal. Mine had the stainless strips like the one in the picture. Both cars had the stock front ends. I had a '39 Standard sedan with a front like my brother's coupe. I had two '38 Deluxe sedans both had the other style side panels. One of them had a hood latch that stood up like a '37. Actually I think there are three styles of side panels uesd in '38-'39. Henry used what he had that would fit until he ran out of it. They changed engines in the middle of the '38 run as well as the Coupe bodies. Some were like Ryan's and some were like the '39s. All of my '38-'39s had two wipers and one tail light. I got ticketed for that. My call is the picture is a '38 Deluxe.

Dual wipers are not uncommon to be seen on Std. models of any years Ford. Chrome-plated windshield frames could be ordered for a Std. if the owner wanted it.
Last year for single taillamp Std. cars was 1941. Some states, like Washington, required dual taillamps way before it became statute.

As has been said, it is a 1939 Standard. The '38 Deluxe was very similar, but one easy way to differentiate is to look at the body side moldings. The side moldings on a '38 Deluxe are located above the body reveal, and when they continue onto the hood they follow the contour of the lower hood edge and on into the diecast grille center piece. The '39 Standard side trim is lower on the body and continues into the "shepherd's hook" style molding on the hood side panels. You can swap sheet metal and many of the pieces between the '38 Deluxe and the '39 Standard, which is to say they fit but are not the same. Swiped a couple of pics from the net to show the difference in the front ends...first one is a '38 Deluxe, second pic is a '39 Standard.
