Have a qustion for all the guys north of the boarder or that have been introduced into the low VOC systems..I have found that all the hi build primers that I use in the past are now junk.. all the so call hi build now that are low voc have no build what so ever and shrink like crazy. after trying a few different produces and it has lead to some disasters.and Im not looking to keep trying something a salemen is trying to sell me and have it happen agian.. The whole low VOC market is pointed towards the scratch and dent market and for us guy into the heavy end it is hard to find a product that will work good on an all over that wont shrink or move after the top coat is applied.. any help here would be great. thanks
pPG has a killer direct to metal tintable epoxy primer in its light industrial line. It sands awesome and is a very high build. It's also relatively inexpensive. Find a PPG jobber in your area that also carries industrial coatings or can get them. I will try to get the product number for you, I can't remember , but a customer jobber recommended it and I've gotten it for 2 vehicles.
I know about ppg for years and never used it.Dont see it around much in these parts..I will do a search and see what I can find out. mean while be interested in those part numbers..
I just use a local cheap Rondex brand high build primer that is direct to metal-although I still use etching primer on the bare metal spots-just a habit I guess. I haven't had any trouble with the low voc primers. They have more build and are thicker as a result of the reduction of solvents. I haven't found their shrinkage any worse than the stuff from 5 years ago. Evercoat durabuild works great and I have also started using polyester spray filler before primer if there is a lot of bodywork on the car. Now as for paints thats a different story. I refuse to use waterborne so I'm pretty much stuck with PPG Omni-single stage urethane. Not the greatest but they can match any color and its single stage. I'm just doing my 63 Impala winter beater in saddle tan right now with the stuff. I really really miss Du Pont CENTARI-it was the best!
that spray filler was one of my problems..if you dont topcoat the stuff I used with a real good primer then the paint solvent eat down through and soften it up and it moves..did a black limo last summer this way..what a mess i have to deal with.. as for the ppg single stage? what dont you like about it? I was thinking of giving it a try if I can find it.. what is it like to water sand and buff?
..if you dont topcoat the stuff I used with a real good primer What did you use That moves around. I really like upol reface but I've never put paint directly on top of it & no shrinkage after 24 hrs but you can sand it in a few hrs. I want to try the upol primer but I've been using 3ms Mar Hyde and really like it. The buff Seams to dry sand a little easier than the black, but you can't beat the black on the wet sand end of it. Not sure if those are available products or not to you.
I have heard good thinks about Claussen Polyester high build primer, I have not tried it yet but plan to
PPG does have a High Build Primer in Water borne.. But you dont spray it like Hi Build.. the mix is 10% of there mixing thinners to there primer.. each coat is a quick even pass on the panel. if applied to heavy it will mud crack... it gets force dried on a angle with a airpaddle between coats.. once completely dried do the second coat. repeat the process up to 5 coats total.. it should be sprayed at a temp of 70f baking 100f max..Do not spray in direct Sunlight Forced air is the key to drying this stuff... it doesnt sand to bad after all this.. just alot of babysitting though..
U.pol....have used... Really like spectraprime....from napa...sherwin williams...great build..flexible..tintable...awesome sanding....just bit pricey..
PPG commercial performance coatings line.... It's their light industrial line. The number is CRE 2 XX. The XX is for what color you would like it tinted. Hope this helps everyone.
