  2. When I bought my 55 Safari in 1994 the paint was already 15 years old and faded pretty badly. After several futile attempts to bring it to some semblance of a shine I said,"F**K it" and started striping it.Every time I added a bit more striping I would cover up some dull area on the car.Eventually it looked pretty shiney but a little confusing.
Then the windows started to de-laminate so I added some striping there to cover up the de-laminations. Then the chrome started rusting so I added some stripes to the bumpers and trim.
Now it is pretty much shiney all over but now the rocker panels are starting to rust out and it is almost impossible to stretch the striping over the rust holes; What do I do now??????
Seriously though if a person wants to have their car look like a rust bucket I have no problem with it.After all it is their car.As for phony patina(actually pronounced, puh-tie-nuh;rhymes with "vagina")I have a lot of requests from people to do aged lettering on vehicles and I have no problem with that either.Besides it's more expensive that standard lettering.
I have people ask me frequently when I'm going to repair the body on the Safari. My answer is simply:"I think I'll let the next caretaker of it get in some body work practice;I'd rather drive it instead." To date it has logged over 170,000 miles and has rarely let me down.

Reason I really like the paint on my '35 (and why I specifically bought it) was because I know I would be raising a family of growing kids around these cars and I never wanted to tell them they could have fun with it be climbing in when they wanted and playing around. It's important for me to create good memories with two of my favorite things in life and having a car with less then perfect paint has bee incredibly fun so far.

I can understand working on a tight budget and when the finances allow spray a coat of paint on it. What I don't understand is people who go out of their way to make a car look rusty and take pride in the amount of rust/dings/dents their car has.

I'm retired and on a very limited income. I run an LSR sidecar that isn't the prettiest in the world and Bonneville turns everything to rust after a week but I try to get rid of it and when I present it at tech I try to make it look presentable.

So far, in summary, it's all about being "cool".

Im building a 30 Tudor & it will "evolve" into the cars that I saw at shows as a kid. Also I think chips & road rash are trophies.Too much of this fake patina down here in New Zealand atm, just my opinion

  13. When I was in my teens and had no budget i worked with what I had,,in my twenty's and having a family to raise I factored in at least enough money to cover a gallon of red primer,,hence to name,,HOTRODPRIMER,,

From my first old car to now,,I always want them to appears as nice as I can make them.

I realize we are not all cut from the same cloth and that's cool,,but I'm just not into rust. HRP

Not weird at all just open minded, I like all kinds as well but not necessarily all or none of either.

If its cool lookin to me, thats just the way it is to me.

I wish I could trade all the patina threads on the HAMB for one original idea thread

Would you think that a car painted to look like it was rusted or aged looks nice?

    Bingo.

    Rust is dumb.

  20. Why spend the time, energy and money painting it...just to look like you never painted it at all?
