Title:
    White River Junction 1913 Flood

Town:
Hartford

County:
Windsor

State:
Vermont

Date:
1913
Description:
This image shows the aftermath of a flood on a street in White River Junction. There is a row of vehicles along the left side of the street with some wooden building on the right. The fourth car back appears to be either a police or service vehicle and reads, "#8 St. Johnsbury." A large iron bridge is along the left edge of the image in the background with leafless deciduous trees along hills in the background. There are several people surveying the damage of the streets and buildings as some buildings are barely standing along the riverbank. The street appears quite muddy and has several wheel tracks with utility lines crossing the street to the building. The season is either spring or fall because there are no leaves on the trees. Esther Munroe Swift writes on 2005-10-11 This is another image which shows the huge amount of damage done by the March 1913 flood that began with heavy rain on the 24th and lasted for three days. 15 miles up the white River in Sharon, the Champlain Realty Company had 2,5000,000 feet of logs which were released on the 27th, when the boom holding them broke. The logs smashed into the wooden Maple Street Bridge at White Junction. The high elevation seen in the far back of the image is known as The Pinacle

The interesting photo above shows workers posing with their product, which were White truck radiator shells that were cast of aluminum and then ground and polished at the Fedders Manufacturing Company Plant #1 in Buffalo, NY. See may more photos and learn more at The Old Motor.
