In 1907, the French newspaper Le Matin announced that they were organising a motor race from Peking to Paris, a distance of over 10,000 miles, with very little in the way of rules, and the tempting prize of a magnum of champagne for the winner.

Here we see Auguste Pons and his Contal cyclecar in Peking before the start. Auguste was the only competitor to register a DNF. After he got lost and bogg...ed down in the Gobi Desert. Stranded, he and his crew had nearly starved to death before being rescued by local tribesmen. The Contal was never recovered. And as far as anyone knows, it’s still there!

  14. This is the oddest looking thing I've seen today, but it's still early. Adding this to my screen saver file.

That is the actual winning ticket. Rudy Schroeder bought one chance for 35 cents and won a Tucker.

Mind boggling to consider, isn't it, TuckerFan? For 35 cents, he got a car that's worth a million bucks-plus today!!!

Is it my imagination, or does this gas station look a LOT like the one in Steve Martin's first big time movie, "The Jerk" ? Gary

  27. Yeah, I wonder if he or his family still have the car? I also wonder which Tucker it was/is?
