The car was Tucker #1008. He sold it after only a short time after three insurance companies cancelled his policy. They said insuring a Tucker was too much risk. He made out well selling the Tucker, which had 95,000 miles on it when he got it, for $3,500 which was big money in 1949.

We did reunite him with the car in November of 2010. The story became one of the top 5 stories on the Hemmings Blog for 2010. Pretty good for a story written in late November.

Thats not a catfish. Looks to be either a goliath grouper or giant sea bass. Definitely not a catfish though ;)

  5. I still remember when Rose Hair Oil was the big thing..... back about 1955 or so.

Jimmi, Yeah, I'm actually old enough to remember ALL of Annette's television an movie deals . I was devastated when I first heard she contracted M S too. scrubba

  8. Actually, wasn't it Dodie Stevens that sang Pink Shoelaces?

I don't remember Annette doing it - but maybe.

But oh yeah, I sure do remember her too, from the early MMC days, and the serial or series she had, called simply "Annette". Even in later years she seemed so elegant, and never appeared to do anything that might have been considered inappropriate.

BTW, how is she doing? Haven't heard much about her lately since having MS.

Hiya, Ron! You could well be right about Dodie Stevens and "Pink Shoe Laces.";) But, maybe she okayed Annette covering it? I seem to remember her doing it "live" on "American Bandstand." No record, just a one-time live performance. Don't know, but I sure remember the song. I'll try and check it out. That's part of the fun of the HAMB, refreshing (or clarifying) old memories, right? :)

Thanks for the clarification, man. Photo info said Arkansas catfish. But, my first word when I saw it was "grouper." So, probably another one of those internet situations where pic info can sometimes be dead wrong.

Thanks again for clearing it up!;):)

  17. Yeah could be about Bandstand, I don't recollect it though.

But I think this is one of her best songs:

NICE shot Jimi! That is a 1904-06 WINTON, just turned up a January 1905 copy of Scientific American with these photos. Note the cut-a-way show engine. WINTON was the only car to use front springs shaped like that. Bob

Dodie Stevens was a singing prodigy at the age of four. By the time she was seven she began making local television appearances, and in 1959, at age thirteen, she had the #1 hit, gold record “Tan Shoes & Pink Shoe Laces”. She sang it on the "Dick Clark Show," Feb. 18, 1959.

She also appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand and starred with Fabian in her first film, “Hound Dog Man." Dodie also toured worldwide with Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Paul Anka, Bobby Rydell and many more teen idols from that era.

  21. The car is a '56 Ford, probably a Mainline. The decklid has been removed and a short pickup box inserted. Not uncommon for country folk to do that back in the days. One of my neighbors hacked of the back end of a '57 Ford sedan and put a box from a '49 F1 pickup on it; drove it around the area for years like that.

Thanks, Bob! Because of the "WINGS" up front, I first thought it was British, then spied the flag and read the cutline.:p It's strangely humorous, too, that the lady is sitting in the shade demurely, waiting for the gent to finish the job there. Now that's chivalry! LOL

Trailwood was a "City of Trailers" on the campus of North Carolina State College (now Universtiy) for married WWII vets attending the school. The G.I. Bill brought large numbers of Vets to colleges all over the country.
