OH BOY, don't let the car hear you say that!!-MIKE[/QUOTE] Ha ha Mike, this car is pretty good, it's the truck that would make me nervous ! I plan to have fun that's for sure and as long as that paint looks good from the grand stands is all I can hope for. Leaving the line with the new combo should be interesting, not as wild as some but I hope to pick the wheels up a little higher and go a little faster.
Looks great Phil. The winter is ticking away and before you know it we'll be at the track. Keep up the great work. You will be alot happier with with the converter and gear change. We did that with the OPel and it brought it right to life. Were hoping to run even better this year.
RTV was setup so I filled the pumpkin, a job that pretty much sucks trying to squeeze that "honey" out that little spout into the hole. Man that thing is kinda just out of reach and not easy to shove that bottle into So lets make our arms longer, or our fingers longer, or just add a piece of 5/16 rubber hose to the nipple. Now you can practically hold it at 90 degrees if you want and squeeze that bottle. The "honey" comes out sweet once you let it sit in a tub of really hot water before you start too. Hope that helps someone and takes a bit of the aggravation out of it.
That is a no-go on this car Clik, the side diagonal bar of the roll bar is in the way. I took a good look at the drivers door while finishing it up today and for the 6-8 lbs saving I'll just use the crank. Here's an older picture just to show what i'm talking about
yup, 2 months to go....lol I was putting a little filler on the passenger door the last couple days where someone let a rabid beaver gnaw on it. Both window frames and all window winders, latches are on the glass doors. Well you know, took it back off to do that mud work, but getting a bit done.
Did I ever tell you guys that I hate finish body work, this sanding is for the freaking birds. I do hope to get the doors into primer by tomorrow and paint by next week.
And I thought I was the only one.... Good thing is there is no real urgency and I use the "one panel at at a time" approach. Every time I'd try to rush on this part of it, soon as I un-masked the car, I'd wish I had spent "just one more day on the body before paint". I'm sure the car is going to look great.
It's kind of a weird situation where as I can't spray in the garage and can't afford to get it sprayed at a shop. I think I do a decent job of getting it smooth as a baby's ass but then here comes the roller which sometimes is hard to get into a body line..lol In the end it is what it is, a car that will look good going down the street or track. No show queen here and I'm ok with it as long as I got some drugs and a couple beers to ease the back pain after doing the work. Bring it on...but only a little at a time..lol
Hey Swade, did you catch the panel painted HJ in the Friday Art Show? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8750679#post8750679
Little update on this, the doors are pretty much done, I just need to wet sand and buff them. I got my convertor back, had that loosened up to 4,000 so that's about another thousand on launch. That and the gear change should wake it up a bit so I decided to get a couple extra safety features installed. The little brackets are the ladder bar safety straps which my old style bars didn't have the upper portion. I decide to get the convertor back in and the flexplate shield to fit the trans. After cutting the corners off and one factory assembly line tab, the trans was ready to go. I spent the rest of the day dropping more F-bombs than a guy has the right to. Being a half an inch away from fitting for an hour straight with nothing that you are doing closing the gap, tears at your nice calm manner. I finally gave up for the night at 8:30, tomorrow I'm going to cut an access hole in my trans tunnel and give the flexplate shield a little more room to fit...I give...lol
Sounds like senility creeping up! Trust me, I am an expert...stayed at a Holiday in.-MIKE Doors look good!
Flexplate shields... bane of my existance. Seems every project I have that I had to install one... it doesn't fit without a lot of messing around. Even the Scout... I have to move the dipstick mount at the bellhousing because it doesn't fit the shield. Same with the Prefect... we have to lower the engine / trans another 1/2 inch so the shield will clear. Just to add to the issue, I had a tech official tell me the shield should be installed in such a way that the certification sticker can be see upon request. (To keep folks from teching with an out iof date shield) Luckily this was no problem with the Scout as you can clearly see the sticker behind the engine, but for a typical door car, you would need to cut some sort of access port. I highly recommend a Flex plate shield, especially with a trans brake but are not "legally" required unless you are going 9.99 or faster Now... once you have the flex shield in place... add a trans shield in a limited space environment. That will surely drive you to drink.
Question... since I'm running a forged aluminum flywheel with my early Olds to T-350 setup would I need that shield?
You know you are right about drinking after the job is done and not needing it. The tech guy told me last year if the car went 6.99 (1/8) it would need one. I should of directed my F-bombs towards that guy..lol Rule book says ANY car running quicker than 10.99 AND/OR135 mph must have both shields (flex/trans) and a ALSO SFI flexplate REGARDLESS OF CLASS unless the rule book specifically allows it--General regulations back of the rule book buried in the Auto Trans section--ya have to look for it---NO shields necessary if ya have an APPROVED aftermarket trans case BUT ya still need the flexplate---2012 NHRA rule book--Section 20 page 12 sub-section 2:14 spells it out for ya-- basically if ya can run faster than 135 MPH or quicker than 10.99 (Art I copied this from another link) thanks man, getting close to moving towards the front clip
Not sure NHRA will allow you to make your own shield, but if you're not going racing at a NHRA track, then it's not an issue.
Ordered some personalized plates for the J, of course BAD MOON, BADMOON, and other combos with spaces and the state insignia were all taken. I was going to use the model number K 513 but that looked kinda plain for my spiffy new paint job. I plunked away at the key board and then, I came up with a little double meaning that will make sense to the car guys. Six weeks to get them but hey they will be boss on the back of there.
How long do you think it will take for your buddies to Magic Marker some Groucho glasses around those eyes? .
