Did your ever try Alsa's PowdaChrome?

I am ready to powder coat my wheels with it. I don't see it listed in your trials.

while I would have loved trying ALL products from Alsa, I was/am limited to my very limited budget, after all I earn $500 per month and now having a baby boy, my first son on my way, so no I was not able to test them out.

good to hear all is good now, but I cant see the pics..

While the price is very very low, and the kit is basically fool proof, you cant learn much with that little amount of silvering chemicals.. and dont be fooled about the "25 sq" feet amount they advertise. its more like 5 squ feet...

the same goes for Angel Gilding, for their 125 sq feet chemicals you can expect to silver 40 sq feet of product(4ml of concentrate of chemicals per sq feet)

  11. This is a chrome powder coated wheel.
I have read this post twice....is is very confusing. But in the end it is clear paint that is protecting the chrome spray on coating. Your process is very complex and time consuming. Filtered outside air (note dust in "chrome" trim rings) and special spray tools. I am looking for a chroming alternative, but I cannot use a paint, it has to hold up to fuel and heat.

Believe me, thats, NOT Chrome powder coat. as good as Chrome Powder coat gets, it will never look just like chrome, the process on that wheel is a propretary process, its not easy, its not for the DIY(propretary) and if you believe my processis complex. then this is beyond that..

this is how the process goes(Edelbrock lisenced such system on their Endurashine chrome like coatings)

The secret to the success of EnduraShine™ is its three-step coating process. First a base coat is applied for adhesion and smoothing properties. A second coat of metal is then applied in a high-tech vacuum chamber for a complete and consistent coat that is actually thinner than a human hair. The third and final coating includes a clear powder coat for the ultimate protection and durability. This all adds up to great looks, exceptional value and long-term durability

    source: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/endurashine/intro.shtml

can a similar process be made on a DIY budget? yes...

I wanted to build such a system(even bought one of the $70 powder coating machine) but I cound only do small pieces(small oven) and only colored chrome pieces. since I was not able to get or mix my own Chrome tinted powder clear coat..

this is how such system could be build..

you would need a Medium sized Powder coating system(with medium/large oven for wheels)..

the DIY spray on chrome Kit..

Black/white ultra shany powder coat/translucent or Clear powder coat.

    the Prep work:
do the proper powdercoat preping(sand blasting and all)
apply the Black or White glossiest powder coat

the Metalazing process: we dont need the ultra expencive vacuum chambers here, with the DIY kit you will metalized the wheel rim(proper, prep work, degreasing, wetting agent)..

then you can apply the Tinted powder clear coat(gold/bronze/green/blue/red)

and thats how you can have your own Endurashine like process

he was confusing a vacuum metalizing/powder coating like system with the traditional powder coating process, such process(like endurashine http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/endurashine/intro.shtml ) are prohibited for the DIY guys like us. but we could build something very similar at a lower cost, maybe when I have more money I could get in contact with a powder coating company and they could build or create a chrome tinted clear coat, with such coat I could see myself doing wheel rims with it, we can do such wheels but with 2k clear coat which is not as durable as powder coating, but good enough for many painted wheels I've seen in the past and Fixing scratches to the clear coat is not a problem at all(three coats of clear or more should help to extend the life of such spray on chrome painted wheels)

I document myself Alot, Knowledge is power..

while I posted the Endurashine process, I now present to you the "PermaStar Chrome" process for wheels, another propretary system that combines, vacuum metalazing and the durability of powder coat, but they do it for wheel rims..

PermaStar Chrome: Our process, trade marked "PermaStar®" is environmentally friendly, using no hazardous materials and producing no hazardous waste. It combines powder coating and vacuum metallization together producing a true classic chrome finish with a deep rich appearance equal to traditional triple plate or show quality chrome. source http://www.goodrichtechnology.com/

I was not asking about the top coat holding up, I realize it is paint. Have they (you) got the process down to the point that there is not a problem with the sliver turning yellow and turning to shit.

You need to make sure the clear coat has a UV protective component to it to keep the silver from yellowing. If the silver is exposed to the atmosphere in any way, it will tarnish. For example, if you nick or scratch through the clear-coat to the silver it is going to turn.

nicamarvin has done an excellent job of documenting his experiments with this process. And I applaud his work and willingness to share.

I've been following both of his threads and have done my own research. I have come to the conclusion that on a driver, it is not practical for exterior use (especially bumpers) or for interior items that get handled a lot like door handles or switches. Of course, the wear and tear depends on how much and how you use your vehicle. It may be a good use for that odd piece of pot-metal exterior trim. In fact you could tint the clear to match the sheen of the rest of the trim. However, even show queens get bumped and scratched and bumpers are sticking out there just asking to get hit. With a paint job it can usually be buffed out or touched up. With this process, it is a complete redo if it gets damaged.

this pieces can take abuse. remember I did a DirtBike? I have been able to fix scratches to the clear coat just like you would with Bc/Cc systems, and 2k clear coats can take quite the beating,
