Welcome aboard jhaas63. I found one..... Dad and I noticed a crack in one of the tail light mounts we built several years ago. I had a minute to grind it out and see what happened. A weld had broke loose. I got it patched back up before I had to get back to work.
Wow. I'm behind on keeping you guys up to date. The shop has been nuts and we are short handed. I just can't thank Dad and Rod enough for trying to help me catch up. Since my last post, we worked on the motor mounts some more, got all of the old wiring out of the way, and installed the new brake assembly under the drivers floorboard, Our local Mac Tool dealer dropped off some fun to help out too. I had Red give it a try and she said it rolls around real nice. While she was in the shop, I had her pose with the rest of my calender girls in the background....... We heard about a break in the weather and took a chance to make the two hour trip to pick up the fresh block before the snow hit again. As soon as the block hit the engine stand, Dad said "Fire it up" And he went to work... Anyone going to the Newport hill climb this year? Looking good, glad to see the brakes under the floor, imo they take away from the fire wall of an old car. I was close on the make of car you said, then is it a Oldsmobile engine ? nice work, keep the pic coming. Jack
It's amazing how much time and work it took to be in the position to build another car with Dad. Only this time it's his turn. Sorry for the late response HRP but I'm going to engrave your quote "It's about time" somewhere on the car. Ideas on where anyone?
Thanks OC. Moving the brakes under the floor made a ton of new room under the dash for the vintage air, and the old brake booster gave up a spot on the firewall to make room for the massive size of the Olds engine. It's a 1968 400HP Toronado engine warmed up a bit. Good eye. Making everything fit and still have the option of shutting the hood is quite a challenge.
Cool story, I will definately be following this one. I'd bet (or at least hope) that it would be any of us as sons dream to be able to build a car with our old man.
I have an idea where to put that quote! Under the clock hole in the dash! I think that would be a good place to put "IT'S ABOUT TIME"! don't ya think?
Dad has spent a lifetime doing with out driving a hot rod while he was teaching us kids how to live. Why not take a few days to see how he wants to live? Months in to this... I'm having the time of my life....
It only gets better from here. Hang on to your socks. If I play my cards right, he might even let me take it around the block.
All I can say is NICE! You hit the nail on the head. I think it sounds perfect. Crap! More woodwork. I'll keep you posted on the progress.
Dad worked on the engine some more while I was putting the final coat of primer on his rear fenders and splash pan.
Thanks Joe. I remember hearing this engine run for the first time back in the early 70's when he put it in Mom's 66 LeMans for a daily driver, the good ole days!
Thank you SaltCoupe. I see you are from Indiana. Have you ever been to the Newport Hill Climb? If we stay on track, we'll be there with Dad's coupe this year.
WOW a Pontiolds in the 60s now that's a memory not many can say they have! Love the build and the story a once in a lifetime experience! ENJOY!
One of his cars before that was a 37 Packard with a Buick mill. The car I wanted a ride in was his Crosley with a 331 Hemi. Then there was the occasional trip to the Drive-In in a 56 Lincoln convert. Back to the Hupp.... Does anyone have an idea how to clean an aluminium intake? It's an Edelbrock Performer series. It was stained from setting and we tried some cleaner but that gave it a bleached look. I ran it through the bead blaster and it looks ok but it just doesn't pop like a new one.
We have tossed this idea around for months. Final decision... "bolt it on", and do the valve covers too. Here's how it went, Dad stopped by and we finished the valve train adjustments. Rod helped me adjust the intake valley pan/gasket (you Olds guys guys know what I'm talking about making this step.) Good fit. Dad did a bit of detail work.... Next was a set of valve covers that would fit over the roller rockers. As you can see in the earlier pics, Dad doesn't care for this style valve cover. The only solution that made sense to me was a cool set of wire looms that will make people scratch their heads. The fun we have.....
Thanks Joe. Here is a picture of how a set of these looked from the factory back in the day. I was busy when Dad stopped by but I had a minute to help line everything up while he was here. After work I checked to see how far he got. The plugs were in and the wires were on so I mocked up one side and texed him this pic. Not sure if the Packard script will survive but he likes the wire routing.
This car already does that. No one can figure out what it is anyway. He had a Caddy emblem on it the last time he took it out. I think we might leave it too. I'll add a pic tomorrow.
Thanks Flowmeister. Now we have a pulley problem. Nothing lines up and a pulley this size on the crank will make it run hot. Great for racing but not for a tour car. Any opinions on pulley options and what we should run?
You may want to check the water pump on the pulley issue. There are two different water pumps used one with air and one without. Mixing them can cause an alignment issue.
Thanks for the advice oldsjoe and sorry for the late response, but we have had another water pump problem. Above normal amount of rain so far this year. Everything has been flooded for a while. We been busy. Dad had a few minutes to stop by and cut out the plates to box the frame around the motor mounts. I'll add pics when we get the mock up engine out so you can see his work.
A day off. And leave the shop? Why? This is the view I have every morning. All boxed up and ready for some horsepower. a quick walk aound...
