Car for sale on that popular auction site. Listed as a 32 Ford with a 460 Lincoln. Engine pic shows a very nice-looking flattie. I have no experience with Lincoln flatheads - is that displacement possible with any combination of boring/stroking with any iteration of the Linc flatmotor? Also, the car is a complete joke (to me anyway), seller claims its a 32 frame, but something about that thing is all wrong. Anyway, not trying to create drama, mostly interested in the displacement question. dj
I think Lincoln flatheads were in the 337 CI range stock. Taking one to 460 would be a stretch (no pun intended). I tried to find that one you are talking about but couldn't locate it. I just think the seller doesn't know what he has. Don
I would LOVE to see the link to that ad. What 'popular auction site' are you talking about. (I suspect eBay) I agree 100% with Don's assesment above.
auction number 111041756684 to answer your question is it a 460 Ci Lincoln motor.....i don't believe so no comments on the car
Yep, that is the one, thanks. Doesn't look like a Lincoln motor to me, but rather a regular Ford/Merc flathead. I had a 337 Lincoln out of a 49 and it was odd looking and regular flathead hop up stuff didn't fit it. I still think the seller has no knowledge of what it really is, he may be just a broker. Don Don't you just love it when they put stuff like a Tweedy Bird on the car to dress it up ? The builder sure did like yellow.
Believe me-I've done the math- I have 337 and ran a bunch of numbers to see just how big I could make it. One big problem is the bore centers of the front and back cylinder pairs. There just isn't enough room for a major overbore without running out of headgasket between the holes. Boring .125 over and stroking the crank .250 only makes a 383. If you could bore it .250 over (which I don't believe is possible) you'd end up with a 409. That would be a mighty big flathead but a long way from 460 (or 417 as was alluded to over on the Ford Truck Enthusiast's Site awhile back). That engine on ebay definitely ain't an EL-8.
The seller seems to have no knowledge of anything related the the car he is selling. Perhaps some HAMB person who is in his area could call him and help him out.
That "car" is the very definition of a diamond in a goat's ass. Beautiful engine, everything else is crap. It also is the answer to the, age old, question, "Can I put an early body on a late frame?"
thanks for the responses - I have asked him a couple of questions (see bottom of the ad), but agree with those above who assert that either the guy is a totally clueless dimwit, or he is a "dealer" who is just as clueless. He says body is a fiberglass 32, but I've never seen one look LESS like a deuce. I need to go to confession tonight to get absolved of my feelings of vast superiority over this poor fellow.
Overhead valve 462 Lincoln is a MEL engine that is made like the old Chevy 348's and 409's with the flat combustion chambered overhead valve design!! pdq67
I had a 1969 Lincoln 460 in my Bonneville Vega for a couple of years. Same as a Ford, but mine came from a friends wrecked Lincoln. Good running motor. Didn't look at all like this guys flathead.
337 flatties also had the distributor in the back Chevy style if I remember correctly. I don't claim to know every car in my area but I've never seen that one.
Hoop98, Thanks for posting that picture. I bet a lot of work and $$ went into that 337. It's a beauty.
