  14. I'm having trouble reading that tail number. I think it's 357. My grand Father was the Ground Crew Chief on FQ-397. I have been looking for pics of his plan for years, with no luck. Looks like this one is a miss for me too. With as few of these that were made you'd think the search would be easy. Still, thank's for posting this pic. I haven't seen this one of the F-82 before. Always refreshing to see one I haven't seen before.

F-82G Twin Mustang s/n 46-357. Per the Joe Baugher aircraft serial number site:
Hate to think that could be the pilot's wife and kids watching him take off.:(

gary i most likely chocked and chained your F-4 at some point. i was in V-1 div on the Coral sea from 83-86 . i caught the tail end of the world cruise . i worked as a blue shirt chocks and chains , tractor driver and finally as a yellow shirt director . most of my "sea" time was at the portsmouth shipyard.

Love those Phantoms. Spent three tours in the Tonkin Gulf throwing them overboard ( I was on the catapult launch crew of the USS Kitty Hawk ). The C's & and I believe D's were the last US fighters capable of doing a double-nickle (Mach 2). They had one of the longest continuous runs of duty of any military aircraft. Tough, fast birds but I do recall a pilot recanting something he'd learned about them during training..."Gentlemen, an F-4 in full flame out has the glide aspect of a set of car keys...so keep'em lit." Talk about words to live by.

Their engines also had a down side for us grunts working under them. At 125% military for takeoff, they were as loud as the damned space shuttle. Went into the Navy with "exceptional hearing"...a year into my tour I was deaf as a brick and still have tinnitus 50 years later. Helluva bird though.

  22. I hear ya on that.... hahaha! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Fucking awesome until somebody asks you for the salt!

  23. 29Bowtie Thanks for all the great truck photos. I added quite a few to my truck photo screen saver. Your posts will make a fine addition to it.

What years? A friend of mine was on the Kitty Hawk in 1968-69; he was a DJ for the ship's radio station KTTY. Remember Tom Post?

Small world x3!!!! In case you missed it, I wasn't aircrew, but the squadron spy. So, did you get your pix in the cruise book? A rather ugly pix of my ugly mug is in there with the rest of VF-21's complement. Boy, those were the days. Gary

  29. I wondered how long that would take. Picture states, civil defense drill with public volunteers.

Randomroddder, thanks for the words of appreciation.
