12 spoke wheel qusetion

    i have a set of 12 spoke magnesium wheels that have no provision for front brakes,were there any that did come with the provision to put front brake on?thanks for any help on this matter.johnny b

    A friend bought me a pair to adapt recently and the boss on the rear wasn't big enough but i'm sure i have seen some done, sorry not much help really.
     
  3. The new style do but I'm not sure about the old magnesium wheels. HRP
     
  4. Hallcraft used to make a rotor that could be mounted by drill-tap the wheel 1/4" 20 just outboard of the inner bearing flange. A lot of those wheels were turned to Junk when the bolts worked loose and fractured the Magnesium.

    Can you imagine how much stress is on that thin hub when you are on the brakes ? :eek:

    Maybe you should sell the ones you have to a drag racer who wants that old time look and buy a set that are designed for brakes.

    Another option would be to find someone that could weld a flange to the wheel that would take a better Rotor. Welding on Magnesium is double tough and High Risk for the wheel.

  9. Yep,,, That's what I was talking about though the Hallcraft rotor was a 1 piece not a Hat and Rotor. Just a little bit Less than a Premieum set up.

    I have a old set of 12 spokes that I was going to put brakes on. I was going to weld a magnesium ring on the back and machine it for rotor. But I hate to polish them all the time, so, I bought a set of Radir Wheels 12 spokes and got the best of both worlds. Yes you can weld magnesium.

    I have a set of 12 spoke American Racing Mags.
    I searched for a way to do it, however, I never found any safe way that I could see.
    I just moved on to "plan B". They are still sitting in my shop needing to be cleaned up and sold.

    Magnesium welding is pretty straight forward as long as you follow the rules but for me that central hub is way to small in diameter, I adapted discs to the mag ARE 5 spokes on my Willys and although a bit of thought was needed the job was fairly straight forward.

    With the 12 spokes, the amount of 'meat' you have in the centre depends on which 12 spokes you have. The smaller Anglia spindles have more meat around them to drill for a hub/ rotor. Early ford spindle versions don't have a whole lot of room for threads etc because of the bigger bearing races, that said I used to run a set which Merv here in the Uk adapted for me by drilling into this edge with 8 bolts, bolting a hub to this and then a disc to the hub. They weren't the biggest discs, from a 125 motorcycle I think with single pot calipers, but they worked.

    I believe somebody had or adapted the mold (or made a different mold) in the 70s and made some sets specially for motorcycles, these may have had better provisions for disc brakes if you can find some of those. There was one of these on ebay in the last couple of weeks.
     
  14. I adapted a small mechanical disc to the magnesium 12 spoke I ran on my Hawg for a while in the very late '70s. I doubt that even with a proper juice caliper it would have done much for a street driven car. 10 1/4'" bolts held about a 6 inch rotor on the hub.

    I have seen some one cars that were supposed to be race/show cars. But again I doubt that they did much but look like disc brakes. The ones I am thinking about were about an 8" rotor with a small hurst airheart caliper.

    Yep they weren't the biggest discs and stopping took a bit of planning shall we say. In the end I swapped them out for some spindle mount halibrand a with bigger brakes and I feel a lot happier knowing that I can now stop. Bit I still love the look of original 12 spokes

    guys thanks for all the input,this has been a big help. i really love the look of these wheels,going to press forward with drilling them for discs thanks again

    Here's the motorcycle wheels. They're aluminum. But it takes quite a bit of work to adapt the wheel to bolt onto a spindle.

  19. There is no provision for brakes for a reason. They were designed for lightweight drag cars that didn't use front brakes. They are fairly valuable, please sell them to someone who will use them as intended instead of ruining them. There are 12 spoke aluminum wheels available new (and pretty cheap) that are ready for disks. You will be money ahead, and not be butchering a pair of rare magnesium wheels.
