Is it just me or is ALL the good stuff gone. Where are all the secret hiding places? I can't find anything I'm looking for. I spent 6 months looking for a Chevy T5 with no luck. Volvo steering boxes are not even heard of. I've been digging for a Maverick rear end for a while and I am still at a dead end. Either all of you veterans already got to the good stuff, I don't know where to look, or the price of s**** is driving these yards to unload the inventory Please tell me it's not just me!
Ironic, I see a post two down about California junk yards touting about all the good stuff still left! Its either just me or the rust belt we live in.
Maybe try here:http://www.macksrecycling.com/macks-auto-recycling When I was in High School in Champaign in 1963 this was my go to place,I left Illinois in '71 have not been back since so don't know what they have but "back in the day" Mac kept tons of older stuff in trailers.
There used to be an old yard north of East Peoria on Spring Bay Road? If it's still there, I'm sure it's picked over rather well. You have some pretty avid hot rodders in your area, and they've been picking up stuff down there for years. Not sure how much is left. Stu
I recently saw a Maverick in a wrecking yard in Malden, MO. Southeast Missouri. I didn't pay much attention to it but it seemed fairly complete. New's Auto Salvage. I was after the 8" rear and front hubs from a '68 Falcon.
If its the one I'm thinking of, its gone. Guess they found out the guy had some stolen cars...and was dumping some in the river. So they made him get rid of it all. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Tonica IL used to have a joint called ACE Auto Salvage...don't know what ever happened to it, but he had a bunch of older stuff, as well as being connected to several other junk yards in that general order.. Cheers...
I know at least in the case of our yard, we did have a lot of old, harder to find stuff. I was hired to inventory and list it all on the internet, and it disappeared pretty fast once it was put out there. Best advice I can give is look at yards out in the country that don't have as much overhead as those in or around cities. We don't have to get rid of our older stuff as often as other places do.
There was an old boneyard in Fountain Green Illinois, a speck on the map west of Macomb, but I haven't been there in 10 years. The entire town was a junkyard for years. My Dad even knew about it back when he was at school in the early 70's. In 2000 or 2001, it still existed and I picked some parts for my old F150 at the time and they had boatloads of metal. Worth a drive someday. But locally in Peoria there isn't anything worth a squirt. I miss living in Evansville, Indiana. They have a pull-a-part that features great old tin and late model stuff for a good price. Most of my ba*****t parts stash came from the three years I lived there and would go junkyarding on the weekends for fun.
About ten years ago I visited a junk yard in Freeport, Il. The owner had two yards, one with mostly newer cars and s**** metal but he had another one about two miles away way out in bush. You had to take back roads to get to it. At the time he was planning on crushing everything in the older yard and closing it. There were a lot of '50s cars in there in OK shape but with a lot of good gl*** and trim. You could give them a call and see if they're still around. The yard address is: A & B Auto & Truck Parts Freeport, IL 61032 (815) 235-8666
Try Johns salvage in Cabool Mo Last time I was there couple years ago he had 100s of old cars of all kinds. 417-962-3237
