  2. 'Brain buckets and a dogdish' - as those helmets were often referred to. This is another great photo from the Army's History image archives. Accompanying short story:

This is the XB-36. The other test aircraft was the YB-36 with the standard canopy design used on all future B-36s.

An interesting fact about Lee Petty is that he was on the track and raced against Joe Merola who was driving Tucker #1004 on May 30 1950 at Canfield. Petty was driving his #42 Plymouth. Merola was driving his #12 Tucker

OUCH!! Didn't see a picture of this incident before. Must be the crash of Dick Seaman in the Belgian GP of 1939. In hospital he whispered to his girlfriend she had to go to the cinema on her own....... That night Dick Seaman died, burnwounds over two-third of his body.

  17. Yes, the '70 is a great aircraft and not was only capable of mach 3, it exceeded mach 3 in testing.
Here is another pic of the final moments of XB-70 #2.

Joe Walker had just collided with the '70. He and is F-104 are now behind the '70 in flames and pieces. You can see both tails on the '70 are gone. It is about to tumble and fall to the ground. A very sad day.

I can only wonder if Joe was flying too close to show off, or was sucked in, or did not realize how close he was. Joe was among the best pilots at the time but, things still happen. How tragic to loose 2 men and 2 planes that day. The only other '70 continued to fly in tests through about 1969, then was flown to wright-patt near Dayton where it remains to this day. I have visited her 3 times. The last time was in 2011, it was moved into another hanger and you get to walk under it. Very cool aircraft, one of my favorites. Anyone who likes power and speed has to like the XB-70. It was killed by MacNamara around '61 and from then on, was used as a research aircraft. The first one flew in 1964. This plane was originally designed to replace the B-52 as the US heavy stategic bomber.

The rear bumper appears to have the indented stripe in it, like my pre Oct. '52. Post Oct they had smooth bumpers used up to '67. The bus has the ribbed bumpers. I THINK they are called Binz and are pre '58. Not argueing, just discussing trivia. Wish I had a bus like that one!

  22. I saw that plane at the Reno Air Races in 2002 and in Oshkosh 2003 before it was crashed in Wyoming... RIP for the pilot Jim Wright who avoided hitting tourists on the ground.:(

Its a Corvair van, red and white, bottom right corner. A rare '64 or'65 model.
