Hey there so I am stuck on my driveline issue. My transmission is a 80's 904 torqueflite automatic with a 26 spline, and the rear axle is a 76 new yorker 8 3/4 with the bigger U-joint. I called the local driveline shop and they want $200-300 for one to be made from scratch. I'm wondering if there's a car/ truck that would have the same components that I have. Or if I'm just gonna have to get two drivelines to build one. Please help me out here. Thanks.
There are u-joints available with two different size bearing cups just for this situation. Either carefully measure each u-joint, or take the parts to a competent parts store and they may be able to provide a solution. Failing that, having the appropriate yoke fitted to your driveshaft is the alternative. Ray
Call Stephens Performance, just google him he is a big Mopar used and new parts dealer. He can tell you what will work and if he has and is very honest. When I needed a 70 Coronet grill he was on the only person who had and I searched for three years.
problem is stephans would want a ton of money for it get the measurements of the drive shaft from the vehicle you own and then gout a buy a mopar shaft with the 904 trans yoke and and have it cut down and get the 7260/7290 split u=joint trucks generaly have longer drive shafts
mancini racing sells drive shaft kits (make it your self) comes with new trans yoke u joints and balanceing wieghts last time i bought one like 10 years ago they were fairly affordable
Get a 4 speed yoke with the larger u joint - same spline as 904, then you can get a pickup driveshaft shortened to fit.
Yes this is on my 59. I need to find a driveline first, have it shortened and get the U joint to fit my axle
You need a "mutt joint" . Precision makes the u-joint you need to put in your driveshaft. A 315g is the small,a 316 is the large joint & a 347 joint is the mutt. I may have to ck my stk,but ive done this so manytimes that i think thats correct. This is for mopar to mopar. marring the 2 different sizes. I do it all the time as my posi chucks always have different yokes. You can get these at a Napa parts store. I have all 3 in stk for my personal use cuz you never know! good luck! -Jeff
Dana ****er's website may be of some help to you. I like the suggestion of using a different slip yoke in the transmission to match the rear end yoke. http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/demenu.aspx
Check the diff again , if it`s from a 76' , it`s an 8 1/4 . Is there a rear cover ? If so - 8 1/4 , if not - 8 3/4 . Your swap my be easier done with the correct ID of your parts .
Yes the rear axle is a 8 3/4 thats what the guy I got it from told me, no rear cover. And $200-300 is bad for me..being a almost broke kid who's trying to get a job and barely p***ing school lol.
Give C*** (Dr Diff) a call or email. He's fair, honest and real Mopar smart - http://www.doctordiff.com/?page_id=50 http://www.doctordiff.com/?page_id=153
OK, lets review. You have a 904 trans with the correct driveshaft yolk, and you have an 8 3/4 rear axle (not a 76, they quit making them in 74). You need a driveshaft because you don't have one at all? The first thing you need it to know is what length of shaft you need. Slide your 904 yolk into the trans and bottom it out. Now, pull it back out 1/2" to 3/4". With the vehicle weight on the axle, measure the distance between the center line of the u joint on the trans yolk and the u joint center line on the rear axle. This should give you your u joint center to u joint center for a drive shaft length. Locate a Mopar drive shaft the correct length or slightly longer. If you are lucky enough to locate a shaft the correct length, all you need to do is install new u joints. Hopefully, one end will match either your 904 yolk or your rear axle yolk. For that end you only need to get the correct u joint. The other end will have to be one of the conversion u joints. If you end up finding a slightly longer shaft, you need to have it shortened to the correct length and probably have to have it balanced. If you don't know how to get a driveshaft, you will need to pay someone to shorten the one you just bought. Once it is the correct length, finish like above. Lets look at prices a bit, Mopar rear wheel drive, drive shafts are getting hard to find around here. A junk yard shaft will set you back $50 (be sure its not bent or dented). Shortening a drive shaft around here costs between $50 and $150 +. Then you have the u joints. El-cheapo joints are about $12, but the conversion joint is $25. (last time I bought either). Maybe if one of the u joints on your used driveshaft will be useable, and you will find a shaft the correct length, then you might get your driveshaft done for around $100. Hope your luck is better then mine. Gene
I do not have a yoke for my ******. And I had one that I had thought fit shortened by my buddy but it was a little shorter than needed and he didn't weld it in the same spot (would have to explain with pics) so I need a driveline. The shop said it would be cheaper if I brought all the parts in. Then all they would have to do is chop it down and balance it.
If you were closer i have about 30 mopar shafts laying around here and i am sure i could find one the right length or one that could be shortened. I guess you could drive it is only 820 miles!
