So I picked up a drop axle with buick 45 fins on it for $250! Took the drums off and it was empty. The guy I got it from had it on a t bucket. I have no idea what the backing plates are off and need to figure out how to make these work. Here are some pictures any advice??
'46-'48 Backing plates, fill it full of Ford Brake parts, grease the bearings install the drums and motorvate. Tim
Appears to be 40 Ford backing plates and 35-6 Ford spindles. Your a long waze from being set up for buick drum brakes. Cal
No, those are 46-48 backing plates. They are the only ones with studs at the bottom instead of adjustment bolts like the 40's have. 40's have 4 adjusters, 46-48 has only the top two. And the grease catcher is upside down, the round part goes at the bottom. Don
The drums have the inside lip ground down and were on and spun fine. I have them off right now because someone painted them black and couldn't stand it. The drums also have a hub mounted on them. I can get pictures tomorrow.
Oh gotcha, I actually read that wrong the first time. Overall u think it was a pretty decent deal for $250 for it all, I'm debating on drilling the axle, I blasted the drums but am thinking of using a dull aluminum paint on them to grease oil brake dust etc is always easier to clean off on a painted surface rather than bare aluminum.
any companies on here sell the brake parts that i would need? i would rather give my money to people or companies from the HAMB, than elsewhere. i think i will go with new put new cylinders on it while im at it
So I really like the look of 15" rims on these m***ive drums. Any advice on what to look for? The bolt pattern is 5x4.75 I would like to run steelies for now, later down the road get some borranis... Way later lol
With that Chevy bolt pattern you should be able to find some perfect wheels for them. Try to find some non reversed wheels that are about 5 inches wide. I hate to see Buick drums sticking way out of the wheels when someone is running deep reversed wheels. They look best with just the edge of the fins sticking out, not the whole drum. For the price, you can't beat new wheels sold by people like Coker. They are not all rusted and cruddy like used ones and are not bent either. Don This is what I mean by just a little of the fins showing instead of the whole drum.....
Not sure if I have lost my mind but a 5x4.75 rim is too small?!?!? Center of stud to center of stud reads 4.75 but a rim off a s10 has a different bolt pattern. I'm stumpted and oddly confused
When you said they were 5 x 4.75 I ***umed you had brake drums that someone had redrilled to the standard Chevy bolt pattern. But now you are saying they are too small ? S10 is standard Chevy pattern----5 x 4.75. Maybe yours have not been redrilled and are just the standard early Ford 5 x 5.5 pattern. Pick up one of the $5.00 plastic wheel pattern gauges and that will verify if for you. In the meantime you can use this method: http://www.ezaccessory.com/How_To_Measure_Wheel_Adapter_Bolt_Pattern_s/181.htm Don
They are correct 5x5 On five luggers, you measure from the center of one stud, to the far side of one of the two studs across from it. That pattern is old mercury, lincoln, some edsel, obviously buick, probably olds and pontiac possibly. And, later model wise I think 2wd chevies in the 80's give or take use that size. And probably more that others can think of and elaborate on. BUT as Don pointed out, for 70 bucks a wheel or so, buy new. And if you spend a little more, you can get the OE style that will only have the five holes you need rather than the double drilled multi pattern wheels.
Went to the yard this morning ad found rims that fit. They are off a chevy caprice, the are skinny 16" spares I'm gonna put the dunlop racing tires on them Now all I need is a rear end and I can start building a real frame
Let me say that you did good with getting the correct offset for those Buick brakes. Most guys don't seem to care if they use ones that stick way the hell out, and look like ****...besides the fact that their scrub radius is way off.
