The true 409's were kick *** cars I alway thought. I have a 64 Impala true 409, 4 speed, all numbers matching, 51K orignal miles, one owner. That I would like to trade for a 32, 33 Ford. Any offers?

LarryT, it is George Horton from Tenaha, I was half the night trying to remember that. He has, or I should say had, a pile of 409's! He had his "farm truck" in the 3/13 HRM Quick32 shootout. Anyway, it was one of those more memorable moments of life drooling over all those 409's, 396's, 427's, and tons of BBC's. Very friendly old country boy type of guy that didn't run me off with a shotgun and probably should've! LOL

This is my 65 409 going in my 60 chev. It has 690 heads, ross 11 to 1 pistons, one notch below the z11 solid cam and now a M/T dual 4 crossram intake. Dripper valve covers, muncie 4 speed, 9'' rear/w/411 gears( torsion gleason center) watts link and dual control arms. Should be fun if the paint ever turns out and I get it back together! Well, we finally got through it today, April 9 2013. Complete dyno testing of three different intake manifolds.
To re-cap, the engine used, was an all standard size 409, with factory forged pistons. The short block itself, was re-ringed in 2006... it IS a little tired, showing evidence of less than perfect ring seal[IMG]. Ported "333" truck cylinder heads using 2.06" / 1.735" valves. Camshaft was from my own series, P/N M242595D. Headers were Belanger design, made by Wilson Header Manufacturing... 1 7/8" tube, 36" length, 3" collector, approx 16" long.

Did a total of 13 "pulls". Same 750 CFM Quick Fuel carb. Timing ended up at 35 degrees total. Fuel used was basic pump premium, with a small dose of octane booster.

      The manifolds:
Stock GM 340 HP 409 cast iron intake ( low rise dual plane )
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake ( high rise dual plane )
      A Bruneau Peformance Speed-Port 6000 intake ( high rise single plane )

In the photo I provide the link to, is the final graph, showing an overlay of the best "pull" with each manifold. Blue is torque, red is horsepower.
dotted line is the stock intake
broken line is the Performer intake
solid line is the Speed-Port intake

In a nutshell.... here are the basic peak numbers ( for extra info, I added some additional range on the horsepower figures ):

      Stock intake
      torque 438.5 @ 3500 RPM
      horsepower 389.9 @ 5400 RPM ( 387.7 @ 5300, 387.6 @ 5500, 385.6 @ 5600, 383.4 @ 5700 )

      Performer RPM intake
      torque 448.7 @ 4200 RPM
      horsepower 424.8 @ 5700 RPM ( 422.9 @ 5500, 424.3 @ 5600, 424.5 @ 5800, 423.9 @ 5900, 423.0 @ 6000, 421.8 @ 6100 )

      Speed-Port 6000 intake
      torque 466.6 @ 4200 RPM
      horsepower 465.8 @ 5800 RPM ( 464.8 @ 5600, 465.4 @ 5700, 465.7 5900, 465.7 @ 6000, 464.9 @ 6100, 464.4 @ 6200, 464.0 @ 6300 )

      The link to the graph:

348 / 409 Chevrolet intake manifold dyno test comparisons

What surprised me AND Dave at the dyno.... was that my intake did NOT give up torque at the lower end. From 3300 on ( where pulls were made from ), it dominated at all speeds.

      Been a long day...

FWIW....there is a fella over in NY state that is setting on a bunch of 409 stuff including 8 409 engines. I lined him up with the estate and he bought the eintire inventory from them of a racer from the 60's.
Lots of performance specs for the 409's over on the 348-409 site. I believe this would be the go to site for all performance related subjects as those guys are building stroked 348's and 409 constantly.
If you want the guys name over in NY I can look it up for you. Just send me a PM.

I had a hopped up truck .060" over high compression w/ hand ground out big valves, NASCAR solid cammed, 348 tripped, (that I installed three big 2GC's on), 409 in my '67SS/RS Camaro on the stock 350 SS engine mounts years ago. 2,5" dia., cast-iron exhaust manifolds fit fine. I bought two '64 Imp. drivers side exhaust pipes and reversed the p*** side 180 fine.

As far as a 348/409 installing in a Tri-5, you should use the Tri-5 front mounts and it's side mount bell housing and you should be good to go!!

And btw, a 348/409 use's a stock SBC fuel pump...

Please come back and tell me if I'm fulla it???

  26. The machine work on these motors is a huge cost....be sure to get someone that knows what they are doing or you will be pouring huge $$ into big $$ parts with a result that you will not like.
The cost of having a good set of cast heads worked (along with the core cost) is so that paying the $2000 for a set of Edelbrock 409 heads is something to consider.....I sold a set of cores for $650 and building them can cost $800+.
I have around $12K in my 409 now but I think you can get into a nice 409 starting around $10K.
These are not hi-rev engines but built for torque.......mine has 450 hp but 550 ft/lb of torque......plus they are just cool !

Shaver Racing Engines offers 409 carb to pan and dyno tested for $10,500.....dont know much about them but is what Street Rodder put in their 55 tour car....I guess a free mill will get you good advertising !!!

I have always liked the look of 348s/409s even though I have never owned one. But I can remember a time when they just weren't popular anymore. Car magazines used to refer to those prehistoric rats as boat anchors. In other words, they weren't worth the trouble.

So level with me guys, with the money I'd sink into building an old school 409 (parts, machine work, etc), would I be better served just buying a crate engine? I know crate engines are a sin, but when it comes down to purely price, does it make sense? All new parts, versus throwing the dice on getting a sketchy block or heads, etc.

I owned and raced (street) two 409's and one 348. Never had RPM problems or reliability issues. Was very capable street player in the 60's. As far as strip stuff famous AHRA kingpin (Del Blades) had the fastest "W" motor on the planet...at least it seemed to me. Just think about it...how fast do you want to go on the street? The 409 will be more than adequate...

Depends on what you're gonna do with it and what crate motor you're gonna buy. You can buy a W crate motor now, but they aren't cheap.

How about a Shafiroff 615 hp/509 ci street engine?
