Anyone ever try Scarebird or Rusty Hope kits. One you need to drill and tap spindles, and the other is just a bolt on. Which one in you guys opinion is a better, easier to do deal
I recently did a Scarebird kit on a 61 Olds. VERY nice kit! Easy, with all the part numbers you need to complete it, as well!
I'd really appreciate it if you could look at my thread http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=744976 And tell me what is going wrong, as I have asked scare bird and have not had any luck with them sorting it out either. All new parts wasted so far. It's for a 55 olds too.
I have Rusty Hope's kit on my 48 Plymouth, the hardest part was enlarging the holes to tap them. I bought a $30.00 drill bit to do the job from Fastenal. The problem comes in trying to enlarge the hole by such a small amount the drill cannot get a good bite in the metal. My slowest drill runs 550 rpm and would not drill the spindle. Had to use a Bridgeport and run about 350 RPM and drilled like butter, after that it was a piece of cake.
used scarebird on our 57 buick, worked well and gave all the part numbers to complete the job, I would recomend!!
I have used Scarebird with no problems. Probably help if you listed what kind of car as all kits are differnt
I used my stock master, just installed the proper residual valves and an adjustable proportioning valve.
What is the vehicle? RustyHope gets better press on the Mopar sites than here and AAJ is a top-notch supplier for many packages. There are a couple more that will pop up if you search. Be very comfortable with the install process as well as the support provided. You won't be happy if questions arise and no one answers the phone.... .
I had not heard back from you on the last email so figured you solved the issue - evidently not. What is the dimension shown here?
I'm putting ford exploder calipers and rotors on my 49 Plymouth, uses the original hubs after removing the drums and a 3/8 thick bracket. There's a thread on here about someone else that did this, I'll look for the link.
Here it is, tons of good information he even put a scaled copy of the bracket to be printed out or he shows really well how he made his template. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=702258
I have the RustyHope kit on my 48 Plymouth Coupe. Complete parts list came with the kit and all parts readily available through NAPA. Tore my old brakes off and had the new kit on in less than a day. Works great and if/when I build another old Mopar I will be adding another of his kits.
Scarebird sounds like its the most popular, but what about Wilwood? I've been looking at a complete brake kit for my 55 Century which Wilwood make, and their kit is complete. Not sayin' Scarebird aren't the way to go, but when you live in the land of beaches and budgie smugglers, tracking down uncommon parts would be a bit of a headache, especially if they happen to be the wrong parts. Just sayin'.
I used scared bird on my 49 buick super, the fit was very easy and there customer help service is spot on.
Hi Darren. Glad it all worked okay. Summitracing have a good price on the Wilwood kit but when I looked at the shipping price, I had to go and slam my fingers in the door to take the pain away from thinking about the shipping costs. I guess if you are purchasing small packages (as in scarebird option) the shipping is not so bad?
We can save your fingers. Our new setup uses hat-style rotors - under the 20# Large flat rate box limit so we can get a whole wheel kit to you for $240 shipping. The Dippy rotor previously used by us and still used by Rusty Hope is $150+ shipping alone - EACH. And you don't have to tap your spindle (complete bullshit to have to do that) nor realign your toe-in.
Wow! That's the complete kit, with all the bits on your list? Great deal. Hook me up with a good price on a duel m/c to suit my 55 century and the pain will be well worth it! - pm sent!
