Very Retro pictures and they really take you back in time when things seemed so much more innocent.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Thanks for the Bernd Rosemeyer correction guys, that Horch is a fantastic piece of kit.

The chassis shot was lumped in with the aero car pics, I arse-yumed it was from that car. Did Merc do a rear engined job?

Edit: Yes, Mercedes did a rear engined car. (I googled it) Though the engines look different to that in the chassis shown. I think the chassis shown may be from the aerodynamic car, not a Merc.

Edit of the edit: One online source states the car was built on a Mercedes 170h Chassis. so good eye that man.

    Google "Göttinger Ei"

That is a Grumman F6F Hellcat fighter. They were built to operate mainly from aircraft carriers.

    From Smithsonianmag.com:
In less than four months, the South Dakota would limp back to port in New York for repairs to extensive damage suffered in some of World War II’s most ferocious battles at sea. The ship would become one of the most decorated warships in U.S. Navy history and acquire a new moniker to reflect the secrets it carried. The Japanese, it turned out, were convinced the vessel had been destroyed at sea, and the Navy was only too happy to keep the mystery alive—stripping the South Dakota of identifying markings and avoiding any mention of it in communications and even sailors’ diaries. When newspapers later reported on the ship’s remarkable accomplishments in the Pacific Theater, they referred to it simply as “Battleship X.”
