  2. Bernd Rosemeyer was more famous than some movie stars in those days. i red the book his wife wrote ten times, it's titled "Mein Mann, der Rennfahrer" (my husband, the race car driver), really a good read..

Her name was Elly Beinhorn, she was a famous female pilot and had a lot of thrilling flight adventures, here they are together:

it really was a heartwarming love story between them! sometimes when i use the Autobahn 5 i stop at the memorial rest place and try to imagine he's flyin' by with i think it was 432 kilometers per hour before he flew off! and that speed was reached on wire wheels with a wooden steering wheel! that makes nearly 270 mph!

btw, his Horch is still alive today and well restored, so look here and sorry for the O/T picture, what a beauty. He named her Manuela:

Those stick on panels were supposed to act like a demister panel by acting as a form of double glazing.

Thanks for the further Bernd Rosemeyer info.

Much as Ford scooped the industry with the introduction of their flathead V-8 in 1932, so Oldsmobile did with their new “Rocket” V-8 in the autumn of 1948. It wasn’t their first engine so configured, which came along in 1916, but rather their first overhead valve V-8. It was the work of Gilbert Burrell, Olds’ chief engineer, ably assisted by Elliot “Pete” Estes. More photos and info is on The Old Motor.

^ I think that calling that the 'Family Truckster Sport Wagon' was somewhat optimistic!

  26. From the LOC archives, 1941:

"An excursion steamer which goes up the Mississippi River from New Orleans to Saint Louis every summer. It stops along the way at various towns and cities, takes passengers on a four hour "moonlite" ride, has dance orchestra, elaborate ballroom and various kinds of entertainment and amusements. Here it is tied up at Lake Providence, Louisiana before its evening trip"

A trip on one of these boats remains on my 'bucket list'

Just Rollin’ Along on Firestones: This is the gas station island that was modernized in the early 1930s after our feature photo showing Jules Verne Allen the singing cowboy and his Model A last week. Check out the gas pumps with the glassed in display case and unique design, that provided secure display space for merchandise right in front of the gas buyer’s eyes. All the details are at The Old Motor.
