just for anyone interested afaik this is one of a few Peugeot Aerodynamique N4X prototypes on the 402 running gear designed by Jean Andreau, with some similarities to a special Delage one-off ...

  13. Oh yes - it was an everyday thing in our barracks when I was in the Air Force. Non-sanctioned though. :D

Dymaxion : The Car for a Future That Never Happened: Architect, author and futurist R. Buckminster Fuller coined the word “Dymaxion” to describe a global concept of design by combining the words dynamic, maximum, and tension. When he applied the concept to the “modern” motorcar, the result is seen here. On The Old Motor We have many photos along with more information and a video about the Dymaxion including all of the interesting patent drawings of the flathead Ford powered machine.

See it on The Old Motor.

Although the car is big and heavy, I couldn't imagine towing a trailer that long and heavy with one. What balls folks had back then. LOL

  18. I would like to see proof that more than just a handful of people routinely pulled trailers in that size as travel trailers. I can imagine construction workers moving their trailers from job site to job site however. They typically owned the biggest, most powerful Buick available that would handle the job. That is a "park" model any way you figure it.

I agree with you. I think the length of the trailer was part of the joke for the movie.

I'll bet the driver of that Mark II Continental was glad he was too late to be involved in this mess.

The Cyclops car was the brainchild of artist Stan Mott, and R&T did use his cartoons frequently starting in the late 50's and thruout the 60's.

His is a very creative mind, his fantastic other creations are well worth a look too!

To give a quick idea how Piero Martini's mind works, let us tip toe up on little cat's paws and listen to a conversation between Martini and a client. During it, the master just might create another ultimate machine. Shhh, listen.

Impossibly wealthy Oil Sheik: Signor Martini, I am blue.
Martini: Hah, I have idea for you! (See how quick he is?)
    Sheik: What?
    Martini: Something expensive.
    Sheik: To buy? Where?
Martini: The personal aircraft carrier! Fantastico!
    Sheik: But cars...
Martini: Exactemente! I make aircraft carrier out of cars, Cyclops Us. They float. So by lashing hundreds of thousands of them together they form magnifico aircraft carrier. Just what you need. No one else has.
    Sheik: But I get seasick.
Martini: Ah hah ... that is why it is land-based carrier. It rolls on ground, desert, your desert.
Sheik: But how could it be a real aircraft carrier with no water?
Martini: We bring our own water.
    Sheik: Where?
    Martini: On deck.
Sheik: But how can the planes land on water?
    Martini: Sea planes.
    Sheik: Well, I don't...
Martini: Don't worry. Will be absolutely safe from Russian scoobie divers. I put sharks in water.
Sheik: You are a shrewd man, Signor Martini.
Martini: Ah, my friend, for you ... anything!
Sheik: What will my aircraft carrier look like?
Martini: It is up above this text.
Sheik: Ohhh, praise Allah! How much?
Martini: I thought you would never ask.

Gotta side with Mac & TuckFan on this! One deer-smackin' CanYerO here! :p But it really doesn't seem so out there, IMO as a lifelong camper, providing the suspension, etc., were set up for this. Young people with a couple of kids could camp pretty well with this setup.;)

Right. Vincent Minelli was trying to get the movie shot as expediently as possible, I'm sure. Can you IMAGINE the hassles when they got into the scenic Sierra Nevadas and found that even their pro drivers couldn't coax the trailer around with 125-hp? I have to bet they sent back for the closest-LOOKING Capri that could be found, with 205-hp. LOL. But generations of movie-goers and car folk have caught this error.

  25. Can you imagine how many automatic trannys they fried trying to make this movie?

Yo, Ron, I'm not the aircraft-phile on this thread. There are MANY guys better at IDs and tech details, buddy. But, I do think that by the time the Grumman Hellcats were added to the arsenal, the VERSATILE "Jugs" had the same version of the P-W WASP engines available. So,the Japanese were running into a buzz-saw, as the defense industries of not only the U.S. but ALL allies really kept cranking out newer, faster, meaner aircraft. They PAID for the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor!

Only Chevrolet Vega. Specially constructed rail cars that were scrapped after Vega production ended. The cars had baffling to avoid fluid leakage while the cars were stood on their nose and shaken for how ever long the train ride was.
