Hello guys, I wanted to see if anyone might know any history about this jacket? Also, history of the process of being awarded a jacket during this time period?
"Dad...I broke my racer" after the Spirit crashed at Bonneville. Coolest thing I think I ever heard after a crash, no BS no excuses just the facts...COOL FIND
I actually bought it several years back when Bruce Nottingham was still alive. I bought it from his son Aaron and spoke to Bruce as well. I do know Bruce & Aaron's history with it (Immediately after earning it, Craig gave it to Bruce for his newborn son. As a way to say thanks for the work on his pit crew). Bruce was a good guy and so is Aaron. What I don't know: 1.) Did the 200mph club have any official presentation? Or did they just mail these to them? (I'm wondering if a photo exists of the presentation or of him wearing it... if he even did) 2.) I read history on Craig's runs but over the last 5 years I haven't really looked-up much on this specific run (embarr***ing, I know). I do know that records didn't last very long, as Art Afrons & Breedlove were leap-frogging each other. Anyone know anything about this run. And lastly... Anyone ever seen another Breedlove jacket? I wonder if he kept them or if he let them go? Thanks for any help....

As the current president of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club I must admit that my knowledge of the very early history of the Club's award ceremonies is sadly lacking. We now hold a banquet on the Wednesday of Speed Week each year. At the banquet we honor the new members who have set their records to that point in the meet. We also honor the new members who set records following the previous year's banquet. The Red Hat is presented on the salt following tech verification. Watching this thread with interest. DW
I have my dads(Gary Cagle)purple jacket from 1957 when he got in the 2 Club,,,I even have the pictures when it was presented to him at the awards party. A guy will be at my house tomorrow to go over all of my dads trophys & old memorabilia---time to let it all go. Troy Cagle
Craig's cars and his shop are in Rio Vista, CA about 20 miles from my house. He is without a doubt a brillant man and a well versed engine builder. The shop is a 24/7 security operation. Big projects going on all the time. He has concepts on paper even the Rocket designers are envious of. But,,, all are both Patented and Copywrited. He has top world Land Speed records on his mind constantly. The Jacket? Not many around and I'd do some research. I only saw those on his Team and worn by his financial backers. Normbc9
Thanks Dale... I'll do that! Thanks Hey Dan, Better get do***enting. These guys are p***ing away at a quick rate. Collections seem to vanish not long after. It's such a neat club. You should put out a notice on your site that you are collecting copies of images and old stories. Have people submit them so they aren't lost. Thanks for the help with the Thatcher car... I really appreciate it! I put in a call to Craig. I heard he retired and moved to Mexico, but I guess that was wrong. I'll be interested in seeing if he returns my call. I hear he is a VERY private guy. Troy, Your photos sound like perfect stuff for Dan to copy for the club archives! It would be a great way to honor your Dad and you would have the originals back.
Deal kinda fell thru,,the guy was most interested in early Sprint Car stuff. He bought a few Ascot posters & other nick nacks that I had collected myself. Heres my dads jacket--------- Troy Cagle
Talked to Mr. Breedlove earlier today. He was very gracious. I mostly talked to him about his photo shoot with Norm Thatcher, back in 1964... but I did also mention the jacket. He didn't offer much insight but spoke very positively of Bruce Nottingham. He doesn't think he had any photos taken with it... Although he seemed very interested. Thanks guys....
This thread has a "traditional" feel to it for sure. Great story and agree with toucan that reuniting the jacket and racer would be a great shot. I am embarr***ed to admit that I thought Breedlove had p***ed away. Was he not hit by a car while riding his bicycle at one point? So pleased that my information was really wrong. I am getting old and confused so please no stone throwing.
