My Gen light comes on when I am sitting at a light or idling. If I give it just a little bit of gas it goes off, it just kinda flickers when idling. I raised the idle a little bit, it needed it anyway, but the light stays on until it is given gas. The belt on the Gen. is good and it is tight (about 1/4 play) and when running I get 6.5 volts on the battery. What is the fix for this light?
    Thanks

If you have a generator, that is called NORMAL operation as they don't charge much if any at an idle and is the same reason you lights go dim as all hell at an idle. One of the hazards of running those "cool traditional " generators rather than swapping to an "uncool" alternator. Back when generators were all we had it wasn't an issue unless we were going real slow on a real dark road and the lights didn't put out a lot of light.

If it's "normal" I'm fine with that I just wanted to be sure.
I am planning on converting to 12V, I already ordered my new wiring harness so I will be switching to an ALT. It probably won't be for another few months though. Just knowing it is normal puts my mind at ease.

As long as the light goes out and it charges when you give it some gas everything is cool. When you go to a cruise night or rod trot you can tell who is running a generator just by how their lights go dim and get brighter when cruising down the ave.

  5. I think I read or saw advertised a company that makes an alternator but with a generator case.

Brings back memories when I was a teenager. Funny how things change for the better and we just take it for granted.

mid 60s and teenager cars from the 50s
AM radio with tubes and only one speaker
    no thought of AC
    no power steering
100,000 mile car was completely wore out and junk
    no amber turn signals
    generators
no cell phones, only pay phones for a dime
    26cent gasoline 11cent fuel tax
15cent hamburgers, 10 cents on Tuesday
    penny candy store
    drive in movies
load the car up with teenagers and just go for a ride
    etc, etc.

Yeah, I've seen them, really cool and not unreasonable on the price. A buddy of mine just put one on his 58 Vette. I already have a good alt. so I won't be doing that.
