flathead 8RT stock except for .040 over bore, cam headers and a 350 holley 2 barrel. I have some friends who seem to think a flathead will rev like a smallblock ford or chevy. I need someone (besides me) to tell these guys what a realistic red line should be. Bobby-- K-nine Racer-- I know that you have the answer. Would you or someone please comment on this?

  3. Tell them to go for it, ignorance should hurt.

5k is a ton for a nearly stock flatty, and where are they going to get an intake that will flow 350cfm.

You're wringing a stock flatty out at 4000. Will it go more? Sure. All the way until the tach reads BOOM!

  5. Go to the Ford Barn early v8 forum. Old Ron has built a lot of flatheads. He will tell you what to expect.

  6. What to expect is to spend a lot of money to build a loosing combination. You are starting with an engine that made 100 ponies on a good day stock and expecting it to compete with engine that make in the 300+ hp range stock.

Now if you were to get into vintage oval track racing where w you were competeing aginst other flatheads maybe you could build a winning combination.

Here is something to keep in mind, the demise of the flaty as a viable racing engine was the valve in head V-8. They still compete in venues like land speed racing because they are competeing with other flatheads that will not be the case roundy round.

Mine has a 4 inch crank and I try to keep the rpm around 4800 tops some times if I have a good lap I might go 5 grand.. I lives a lot longer that way... I have been told that you can turn the 3 3/4 stroke a little more but I have never had one in a race car..

But THIS is in no way a stock engine 0.040 over with a cam and headers that the OP is seeking info on.
