I have a sbc guessing around 10.5 compression running 16 degree initial timing 36 total the motor turns over great for the first start but after it warms up it wont hardly turn over. Is my starter just weak or do I need a hi torque starter? I have been looking at them and there are allot of different makes, any suggestions would be great

A good Sbc starter should work fine. What size cables you got. How far is the battery from the starter? Battery in top notch shape. Last but not least. How are the grounds. Frame to engine battery to frame . Grounds same size as battery cables are good.

  3. Try backing the timing down a bit.

I am running 0 gauge wire with new battery, Im not sure if its because of the tunnel ram but it really seems to like allot of initial timing, cam is 230 degrees at .050 480 lift 108 lsa flat top two valve relief with 64 cc aluminum heads

  5. So get a recurve,

Try backing it down to solve the starting issue . That takes a couple mins and is free. If it needs more total, send it out for a recurve. Gmc bubba is the guy I'd use and is going to be cheaper than a new starter, bigger battery, and thicker cables

I had similar issues, not sure if it was heat or ground.
I wrapped my starter in heat reflective material and I attached an aluminum shield to my p*** side header. I also changed the negative battery cable and the bolt it attaches to the header with. I haven't had no troubles since.

As Vicky said try backing down the timeing and if that helps then you need to work on the dist advance curve.

is your starter getting really hot? are the headers hugging it too closely? that could be a potential problem

I first started with around 10 deg initial and 34 total and had to have the idle up real high to keep it running as I advanced it it got allot better and let me close the throttle plates allot more and idled allot better without running real rich at idle so I changed the bushings to set the initial at 16, it idles real good without burning your eyes and runs hard all the way to 6500 so I think that's where the motor is happy and was wondering about the starter. After running if I let it sit for 10 miniuts then it will crank faster but if I try and start it with in a few miniuts after I shut it off it turns real slow

Take a jug of water with you on a drive after you get it wormed up shut it off and dump the water on the starter and see if it starts better if so then you know you need to look into the starter.
