BIG THANKS, guys! Gotta mark the passing of such a monster presence on the TRAD country music scene, fer sure!

(Oh, BTW, I heard on good authority;) that they opened George Jones' casket, and it was empty! Some old cat in the crowd was heard to mutter knowingly: "Figures! A no-show to the very end!" :D Thanks for the memories, George. Death may have taken you, but even death will never take away the memories of your unique voice, songwriting skill and, of course, soulful inflection and delivery! RIP)

The building looks to have been a Howard Johnson's restaurant or motel at one time (the orange roof and steeple on top were a signature feature of HoJo's) ... could have been operated by another company at the time of the photo.

Every time you post a picture of Chrystal Beach - I smell the hydrogen sulfide from the chemical plants West of Buffalo on Rt 5, (Mid to late 50's) - Chrystal Beach was a once a year trip from Erie, PA with 3 adults and 5 kids in the car - We, the kids, got threatened at least 12 time to stop fighting or they were going to turn around. - What a place for a kid
The trip was about 280 miles round trip on a 2 lane road thru many small towns, There were no Thruways or Highways, lots of trucks, farm equipment and what have ya - We would leave about 4:30 in the morning and not get home until well after mid-night

    Thanks for the nose disruption:)

Today's goodies are brought to you by your friends at the Diners' Club:

Looks like she's had a couple cocktails already...

And by Avis. We'll try harder several years from now.

From an article on the new compact cars:

Drive the new Jeep Surrey and no one will ever take you seriously again!

    And for the kids:

    What you wanted for Christmas:

What you got, if you were lucky:

A thoughtful gift you can melt down for the gold in 50 years:

And finally a couple shots left over from my 1975 Paducah photo safari:

I saw the car again a year later; unfortunately it had been rear-ended badly...:(

The SS Normandie, a French steam ship built in 1932 that held the 'Blue Riband' for fastest crossing of the Atlantic several times. Regarded then as the most lavish passenger ship ever built it was in direct competition with the RMS Queen Mary for both monikers up until WWII.
The ship was sized while in NY buy the US, the ship was re-named the SS Lafayette. Transfered to the US Navy in 1941 the ship was docked in NY harbor for re-fitting as a Troop Ship. During this conversion the ship caught fire and capsized at Pier 88 sinking down to the mud below.
It was considered non-cost efficient to re-float the ship and repair it during the War so she remained laying on the river bottom until 1946. She was then re-floated and was to be repaired and put back into service until the damage within the ship was found to be much more severe than previously thought. Subsequently, instead of sailing again the SS Normandie was sold for scrap!

This is the cockpit to the first 'Spitfire' K-5054, quite a rare picture this shows the very early cockpit layout with a later armored windscreen. The first prototype Spitfire had a single curved piece of 'plexy glass' for the forward windscreen that distorted the view quite badly!
Production and later mark Spits' had a much more cluttered cockpit, they also had several window supports going from the armored windscreen to the top of the canopy coming.
