steam engines used a engine preasure/speed device that had counter weights on it that spun around. centrifical force would spin this afair till the balls were "balls out" or some said "balls to the wall" wide open!!!

  16. I forgot about that saying referring to the Woodward Governor at high speed!

    Thanks!

  17. I worked at a mine as a hoist engineer. They had a speed control that was called a Lilly Control and had a governor like the Steam engines with balls that swung out as the speed increased. This is where I first heard the term "Balls to the Wall". It was the responsibility of the hoist oilier to oil the governor every shift. When you were breaking in on the hoists the engineer would remind you to oil the governs balls. The hoist were 3600 horsepower. They were cool. The motors were DC and there was a motor generator set that produced the direct current. The drums were tapered and when all of the wire rope was out you were on the 12 end of the drum. The large end of the drum was about 24 feet in diameter. The wire rope was 1-7/8" and weighed a little over 8 lbs. per foot. The bottom of the shaft was about 5100 feet. The small end of the drum gave you a lot of torque to lift the weight of the cable. There were two drums on the hoists and as one cage or skip was coming up the other cage or skip was going down. The hoist were made by Nordberg out of Wisconsin. The hoist rooms were built were built in 1939 and 1942.
