Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by plodge55aqua, May 5, 2013.

  1. yeah....get a different transmission

as for the engine , i don't see anything that scares me yet. are the pistons stamped with an overbore size? can you measure the bore accurately?

Thanks,... can I use the Flex plate that is here? I gather a torque Convertor and Turbo 350 would be better.. I thought the PG was toast when I seen the Hole ..

what tools should I get for measuring these parts and Cylinder walls?

As mentioned, read up and maybe a community college or ROP cl*** on engine rebuilding.

Ask around; find a good local machine shop!!!

Find a mentor or a local rodder that will come over to your garage for the better part of a day and guide you through final ***embly when the time comes-even if you have to pay him, trade him parts he may need or barter labor (can you do body work, carpentry, etc. in exchange?).
Hopefully, he'll have a good torque wrench, ring expander, etc. You'll learn plenty; from plastigauge to dialing in a cam.

Other (compromise) option on ***embly would be to pay your machine shop to ***emble the short block, then do the rest of the long block ***embly yourself.

Perfect! Even if they're able to do bodywork, most motorheads don't like doing bodywork. They would much rather have some fun puting an engine together.
Do some bodywork, or help someone do bodywork (they learn something)on their project in exchange for having them ***emble your engine with you (you learn something). Later, once you've installed the engine in the car, have them come back and spend a couple of hours doing the initial start, tune and break-in with you.

Trade labor, make a new friend. That's what it's all about.

Go for it! I've had a "couple" of Impalas over the years and I reckon the 283 is a much under-rated engine. They run great and don't use heaps of gas either. Even with the old 2GC Rochester they'll go well. Early ones sometimes got cracks in the heads so check that. Later model small cc heads with hardened valve seats are a good option for unleaded fuel of course. It will cost pretty much the same to rebuild as a 350 though. I'd go for the TH350 trans as these little engines don't make heaps of torque and a PG is like starting off in 2nd gear for them. As others have said - get the book...small block Chevy engines are easy and fun to build.
