Thanks guys. I got up early today and was checking out the subrails. They seem to be decent in the door sill area, which is good enough because of the 32 frame going under it. I think I'll just try to repair the front of them unless I can find a cheaper solution. $335 seems like a lot considering I'm just going to cut them in half anyways. I could spend that money on brakes, or a rear end, or interior, or gauges, or steering, or engine parts...man I need a lot of shit!

some advice.... Make your self a list...of everythign that needs done, and the parts you need to buy.. do one thing at a time and dont move past that till its done.. you wouldnt believe how fast the car will come togehter. i was always bouncing around on mine. never got much done. till i put a giant sign in my garage of everything that needed done.. and i stuck to it. so far so good!

That's a great idea. I did it with my bike and it served me well. Except i always seemed to be adding small items I forgot. Anyone have a list of part of a list that they used? I could modify it to match my build. One of my biggest concerns with this build is having to re-do things because they were done out of order, due to me being a FNG.

Nice start but my first thoughts is to put some cross supports in before you cut any more out, if my memory serves me right there is someone here on hamb that makes a corversion for the sub rails from 30 to 32 frames maybe someone may know who it is and chime in or it gives you the excuse to buy that bead roller even the cheap harbor "fright" will get the job done, be watchen good luck----------------jack

Cross supports are a good idea! Ill do that. Prob should have already. And I think you mean the steadfast mfg kit. It's in the budget already. Just waiting on the frame to make its way down the line.

Going well I put the last deposit in my "pay Gary Maxwell for my 32 frame" fund my turn should be up here around the first of the month

I've been banging it w a hammer for a few weeks and finally feel like it's "close" sure is a lot to learn! Especially when yur teaching yurself. I got all my patch panels and have been taking off the poor patch work done by the previous owners

Got my dropped axle and spindles and hubs and spring all ready for the frames arrival. Debating on how much to cut out and patch (floor and sheet metal) before the frame is here. Seems stupid to cut n weld now just to have 10 hours of work and cause myself 50 hours redoing it later if adjustments need made.

Check out my other threads. Lots of useful tips on titling from members. Dont wanna get OT here but frame stamping, I've been told, is very illegal.

Any of you guys have random car guys know about your car and show up at the house? It's happened to me five times now in two months. I don't mind, but it's interesting how word spreads and how shocked they are when I'm under 30.

Doesn't seem to be many under 30s doing this around central Pa. Hopefully I find that I'm incorrect about that. If you're ever near Hollidaysburg let me know!

  19. Im originally from the Somerset area so I get back to the Johnstown/Altoona area from time to time. I know you are a little ways from Pittsburgh, but look up the "Pittsburgh Area Rodders" social group here on the HAMB, there are alot of posts about things going on in Western PA you might want to check out.

Had a few hours yesterday so I decided to get off my ass and do something. Welded nuts to the cowl/gas tank screws that wouldn't come out with a screwdriver or drill. Got all the bolts out and cut the tank off of the cowl top. MAN DID I FIND A SURPRISE!!!

Not surprised to see the dirt but there sure is a LOT of it.

Got the top laying on the cowl to see how it looks. Fits pretty well. I'm gonna get the bottom cleaned up where I cut the tank off and get it ready to be fitted permanently. Any thoughts on welding the seam between the cowl and tank top? I think it may look a little better. Any reason not to do this? Just a thought.

Also, here's a few shots from a few days ago when i removed the riveted/body fillered "patch panels" one of the POs put on.

I'll be back at it tomorrow night hopefully, I'll do my best to keep you boys posted...

Looking great, I bet that frame about just pulled off the frame. I know some of my rivet and bolts didn't have much holding power left.

Flop, I've watched a lot of your builds and progress on here and instagram. You do AMAZING work! As far as the body lines, I've seen your "struggles" with making yours match. However, I'm lucky enough to need patches from the firewall to the wheel well. I got some Brookville patches, hopefully I don't have much hassle with them since I don't have anywhere near your skill-set. Fingers crossed! I do know there's no curve to the patches so that's something I'll have to figure out.

As far as welding top of cowl on, I would at least wait until you are further on in your build. I have had the top of my cowl off many times while working up behind the dash. Dash comes out as well, so anything on the back of the firewall, need braces for steering etc. was easier to access. That is just my thinking.

Spent most of the past couple days in the garage managed to get a few things done.

Filled that pesky heater hole in the firewall... The bead still needs work, it's close but not close enough.

Spent a little time on the steering cut out and a crack on the passenger side of the firewall.

^^^this one looks better now, I found my 45° air grinder today and finished it up.

This one really took some doin'... Still have to get a sanding disc in there and another out the welds. Took 30 mins just to straighten it out!

Also, I made some patches to mend the front of my subrails, which are SHOT. Hopefully they're close enough to actually work, seeing as I don't have much left to base them on. Made a wood buck and pounded away for an hour. I think they turned out really well... Thoughts? Things I need to change?
