I'm kinda in the same lanes as above where it's just a bit radical to really be a forties build. True, it could have been a comp coupe, but then it wouldn't have had fenders and such. California really didn't have a fender law until about '51 either, so that would knida push the bobbed fenders beyond the '40s too. I'd say stick with the sixties build, and there isn't anything wrong with a traditionally dressed small block Chevy!

I think you couldn't go wrong emulating that old coupe in your B+W pics. Note it's really a 1950 build, not 1940's. The bodywork on your coupe looks just like what they'd have done around then.

If you haven't found what taillights fit into those rear fenders, the openings look like they are '41 Studebaker. I kinda know a little about Studey lights.

The very bestest solution is to avoid the problem entirely by having it shipped to me.

  6. Another option. These pics are from the early 50s.

Couldn't help but notice the unusual firewall treatment on your deuce. Is this something that was common practice on channled cars?

Either style is good, but I would prefer the 40's.

As my friend Lucky1974 likes to say, "Can't it be both?"
You want 40's style on a (seemingly) 60's car. Run the flathead, leave the body the way it is. Paint it black, buy two sets of wheels and tires (steelies, caps and skinny tires, then mags and slicks) and swap them as you see fit. Would be a quick way to change decades for not a whole lot of money. Just a suggestion. Yeah, wish I had your problem!

I was told that by the previous owner but the '41 Stude tail lights are rare and pricey just to see if they will fit the holes.

    Wana loan me one?

I was thinking the same thing of adding black steelies with blackwalls but in addition adding a full hood to hide the 283 if I went that route.

  15. Ho... Lee... Shit..., that is badass. I would build it like this one...for sure.

Guys, I appreciate all the positive feedback on which direction to go.

We are expecting our first child in October so that may change things dramatically as far money is concerned, so the least expensive route would be to continue with the early '60s path I am on.

Anybody got any early '60s 32 3W pictures they can share for encouragement?

They put flatheads in 60`s cars also but I realy dont see the problem. You will probably have the car for a very long time or even for life and most guys change their cars many times over the years. Build it the way you want now and do it another way later. My opinion is always 60`s first .
