I am making some curved filler panels that go adjacent to the rear seat. I made them from 1/8 inch hardboard and they will be covered with vinyl. Can I spray mastic directly onto the hardboard and vinyl and join the two surfaces? Does anyone with experience in working with vinyl see a problem with this. The vinyl is pretty heavy marine-grade material.
I've used 3M 77 spray adhesive and regular old contact cement to do the same job. The 3M didn't hold well, but contact cement applied to both hardboard and vinyl worked great!
When I made my 50 Olds door panels, etc I used a thin layer of foam rubber and used contact cement only on the back side of the panel board to fasten the material. That was in 1973 !!!! and it still holds everything in place just like it did 40 years ago. I highly recommend contact cement.
Thanks for the info. I used 3M yellow super trim adhesive in aerosol form on the hardboard panels and the vinyl, let it tack up and then joined them and it worked out fine.
Yellow adhesive has a tendency to bleed thru lighter color vinyls when the are exposed to the sun. Use white adhesive.
I think that's a huge dog...but for the life of me I can't imagine anyone smearing a dog on vinyl...or vice-versa...so I guess I must not be correct...!!! R-
Mastic is adhesive, the term is more common for "gluing" tile to walls, my guess the OP does some construction work. ????
