348's

They may look like 409's but because they are painted orange they are surely 348's. 409's were painted a blue-gray. And, no, I wouldn't get excited about owning any. They were a truck engine, way too heavy, pressed into service to counter the flood of big engines from FOMOCO and MOPAR.

 

Really? I never knew that. I think that my mom had a '58 Impala with a 348 and it seemed to have a lot of pep. But then, I was about 12 then and every car seemed all-powerful. Thanks for the info.
Of course, the one thing I remember best about that car were the absolutely terrible brakes. Hit them at 35mph and you might stop by the time you got to Philadelphia!

The '55 Lincoln introduced the "self lubrication" system where you pressed a button on the dash and it lubricated the various points. They retained this as an option for at least a couple of years. This photo was to illustrate the system.

 

You are correct that these are most likely 348's but wrong about the color. As one who had a new '62 409/409, I can promise you that the engine was orange as well. The easiest way to differentiate the 348's and 409's was by which side the dipstick was on.

As far as the disparaging remarks about 348's, you are also wrong. They had plenty of configurations over the years culminating with the 335 and 350 HP versions. It was certainly possible with a 348 to blow the doors off the boat anchors Ford was offering as engines in those years.

 

Thanks for the answer, Jim. That one really had me scratching my head. I wonder why new cars, with all of their doo-dads and gizmo's don't have something like this?
