I was pretty happy with the Accel unit I got for a Buick sometime ago. Easy install and it worked like a champ.

Send it to GMC Bubba http://www.lindertech.com/ here on the Hamb along with the appropriate handful of cash and have one that works when you get it back.

I've had Petronix in my Flathead for a few years now and have always been happy with it.

Depends on the Ford. If you are in the Load-O-Matic era, you are better off with a different distributor.

I am not too sure that that you have one. If you do, and for those who do, here's a good read: http://m571.com/yblock/loadomatic.htm

In short, any distributor, with real mechanical advance, is better than a Load-O-Matic.

I dropped a crane fireball unit (similar deal to petronix) into my stock ford distributor and I am very happy with it.

pertronix! under $100. Take ya a half hour to do. Follow the instructions. Anyone can do it.
Or ya'll can sit here and spend days talking about it Pretty sure with well over 100,000 members theres got to be at least another 90,000 opinions. Just pick one

  16. I just posted last week on an OT forum (early porsche) asking about electronic ignition conversion. All I got was a bunch of bitching about fixing a problem that isn't a problem. Well, I've been pretty happy with the hei s that I use in sbc s.
It was advised that if I switch I'd better carry the old distributor with me for on the fly repairs. So, why the bad sentiment anyway?

Some guys here hold it up as a merit badge to be hypercritical of things that they don't like, as well as some who believe it a point of merit to waste as much fuel as possible, even when tuning, or better components are within easy reach.

I just installed the mallory piece on a sbc and used a new blaster 2 coil with it. Ran straight voltage to it and worked fine. Mallory says to use their coils but the blaster is a great piece.
I just ran mine to break in on my stand, but noticed some strange behavior as far as timing. Pretty basic sbc with a tunnel ram but it wants about 50 degrees of timing for some reason, just to run. Anyone else seen anything like this with their conversion?

just got this from a post reply to me

    crazy,
    Have you already dropped cash?

A lot of the fellas use petronix ignition and I have used it with good success myself. I am partial to mallory unilite though and given a choice I will go for it nearly every time.

There is an option that no one has mentioned and no doubt that you have not considered. An MSD box with your points will work as well and any electrinic, your points last a lot longer with this setup as thay are only a trigger. And yoy have an added bonus that no one considers at all. It the box takes a dump about 30 miles the other side of Stayl Sandwhich or Pig Snarf all you do it bypass it and cruise home on your stock ignition. No extra parts to carry. <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

X2 on the Pertronix. Put one in our 66 Fairlane I6 a couple years ago, no problems, put the points/cond in the glove box, still there.

If you can put a ford duraspark dizzy in there why not just use that? I have been running for those for years and they are idiot prof. What engine are you running? That would help for sure

Neither the Pertronix, or the Unilite module require that the distributor be modified. Just put the points, a feeler gauge blade, and any extra screws in a baggie, and put them in the glove box. In the unlikely event of an electronic failure, just put them back in.

When it's raining like hell or 5 degrees or 110 out you will wish you'd left the points distributor in one piece so you could just swap it out. Get a second distributor and keep the original one as is so swapout is somewhat easy.
