I hope they got the aircraft back aboard. But I suspect the student pilot went on to have a great but alternate career as a black shoe, driving large gray ships around at a much reduced speed! Gary

In the meantime, maybe you could refrain from complaining about people who actually are contributing great photos like SouthURN. I love the Cadillac photos, if you don't, scroll past them. Thanks.

Jus try and do anything close to that with signage today. I can almost guarantee you problems from some stupid "Special Interest group ! scrubba

  18. One of the really fun things when I was a little kid was seeing all the signs we passed as we went on errands around the city. They were often individualistic and sometimes a little crude but always colorful, especially the active neons. Almost all were one-of-kind so when you saw one in particular you would know where you were.

  24. California's true wealth came from its "Black Gold"...oil...!

The 49r's Gold rush brought the greatest population growth until the oil boom.

Oil is starting to creep up to the surface again... wonder if the environmentalists will protest that?

    Aren't you begging a redundant question ?

Seems to me they would protest the nasty Volvos they drive too, provided we would give them "Media Coverage " !!!!!!!!! scrubba

Mike, Don't know what year that one was taken, looks pre-war.

Most of those derricks were gone by the late 50s early 60s.

    This one is dated 1956

  28. Hahaha... so true!

They protested the cutting down a dangerously dead redwood that was ready to colapse.

I found this same picture in the Orange County Archives, dated 1935. I have other pictures of this same scene from the early 1920's to the late '50's ... the view was pretty much the same.
