    There is about a million threads on this forum, including pic threads of valve cover bolts, but not a single one about the cars I love most (I know it, spent days lookin' for it).

    I want to see jalopies! Gow jobs, hot iron. You name it. No candy ass cars, no sbc, no flatrods, no ratrods, not even the well built obes, no Mustang clips, no squash chopped idiot cars with spikes and engines and wheels above the roofs. No S-10 suspensions, no bags, no new toyo tyres, in fact, not even modern threads on whitewalls, no Cragars, no billet, no fucked up Z's on frames, no scrapers, no repros, no kitcars, nothing past 1932...

    I want bangers! Mechanical brakes. Multiple carbs, Winfield heads, maybe early Flatheads, spokes, steelies, Ts, Abones, no fenders, full fenders. Pics from today or from the times gone by. Whatever.

    Now, I know of dudes here in Denmark driving such things (and that means people whining about having to buy a Superbell because they are not willing to restore genuine items are lame), I know of Sweden where this cars are driven harder than you could possibly imagine, and I know some old bw pics from the US where this cars were born. I know of Claytons T, and I know of few others.

    Show it! I want to be inspired, get ideas, dream!

    To make it a bit easier to undestand I begin. Each of this cars fits the bill. Pics are by all kinds of people, I will add more over the next couple of days. Your turn. Enjoy!

    Oh yeah, forgot to add.

    If you begin your post with "It's not what you guys run...", or "Not exactly HAMB friendly...", so don't fuckin' post it.

    Did.

    The traditional thread is not exactly what I had in mind wanting Jalopies and Bangers. It's a fantastic thread and a great lesson in history, but it's full of Hot Rods, period correct sleek racers seeking speed, they are not Jalopies in my book.

    There is that fine line between these cars, difficult to draw, and some cars are on the edge. Guess I just want a banger inspiration thing, cars build to impress girls back then, not to zip around at 120 miles per hour, and cars that are odd. Crazy exhausts, on budget... Dunno exactly. Like the stuff I posted.

    A while back while visiting a friend at a burger joint someone said "who's jalopy is that out there" I was a bit put off and then I realized that is what it is. Unfinished, rusty, and loud.

    I love this thread! I have been watching old movies on youtube, old hot rod movies and I love seeing the cars. I see a lot like what you're posting.

  12. This is my kinda thread. Here's my A banger mocked up with a vintage Winfield 6:1 'Yellow Head', Winfield SR-B carb/intake, and Model B distributor with Wells hi-speed conversion cap;

    Will dig thru my stash of jalopy pics...

  14. One more...Chris right here on the HAMB has one of the best 'eyes' for the 40's "run what you brung" style IMO. His A roadster looks like it came right out of a Don Montgomery book;

  15. I lied. Crazy A banger exhaust;

    Well... I'd go that far and claim that everything past 1932-33-34 ain't really a jalopy. Not sure how much irony I read out of this one sentence either...

    Again, it's a "foggy" ground, trying to describe where, and what, and why, and what is a jalopy, since the term is not really describing any style of car, but a whole bunch of automobiles, much like the nice word: "heap".
    That said, the Ford you refer to ain't a Jalopy in MY EYES.

    The first pic in my first post, that's a flat, most likley basecoat or primer finish, banger, mechanical brakes, apears to be a stock Banger, some whitewalls, and it seems that the dudes have fun. That's a Jalopy! Noone would argue the fact that it ain't a rat rod, or even close, it's clearly period correct, since that pic was taken somewhen in the 50ies, but is it a real hot rod?
    Same goes for the black roadster I posted though. Shiny paint, clearly not neglected, but somehow a Jalopy. Makes me grin seing cars like that.
    Iskys La Cucaracha, that was a Jalopy at some point, before it got the V8 and the full threatment. It was supercool, and although the current La Cucaracha has to be my favourite Hot Rod of all times, I somewhat wish it would still look like that:

    [IMG]

    My favourite description of a Jalopy comes from a book, or a magazine, can't remember, but it goes kind of that way:

    "The Jalopy is a car that you grandpa would be displeased of, if your dad came and picked up your mom for prom in it"

    Mothers worry... Somewhat like that.

    I see it also as cars that were inspired by lakes cars and real hot rods. Highschool dudes that had no money to put together a V8 and race it, but still wanted their automobile dream, so they'd strip the shit out of roadsters, and whatever they could get, to get their cars look like the the famous racers.
    Kinda sorta' like Nascar circuit these days maybe, noone would drive one on the street, but there are more than a few street cars that are inspired by it, stickered numbers, paintjobs, blabla...

    The other thing is neglection, and rust. Ain't makin' a Jalopy. I am sure that back then, no kid was choosing primer or patina as a finish, but were mowing lawn to get the cash to pay for a paintjob. BUT, there were cars like that, no question about it. Even if it was just a "period" thing that didn't last forever, there is more than one early hot rod/gow job/hot iron that was painted with a brush with an attempt to buff it out, but there also tons of those Jalopies running rust, flat black and stuff like that. When I read the people who were at it back then bullshitting about primer and flat paint ain't the way it was ever, I am in the mood to slap them with a stack of photographs so that they come back to their senses.
    However, these days the rust/patina look is a recent thing, just a choice of the owner to show the age of the car. Some patina is of course not "like it was back then", because back then the cars weren't sitting for 50 years, but some intentions are the same. My Jalopy won't end up as I found it forever, it will be shiny and black at some point, but it will take some time, and sure as hell it won't be a hot rod per definition ever.

    Gwhite got it in my book. Love the stuff, that's exactly what I want to see. 100% Jalopy, no ratrod shit.

    Sorry about the rear tires. I picked them up for $80 on CL, But did use two screwdrivers to put them on, now that in itself is Jalopy.

    Heres my Jalopy with my kids in it. We were out playing in the snow last winter and found out 50 year old bald tires don't have very good snow traction. The doors forward are original ford steel and behind the doors is whatever I could get my hands on including the bed made from a 1940s kelvinator fridge.
