WOW, What a great short FILM.

Everybody is dressed in best attire, look active and healthy.

What the hell happened.

 

I agree, that's a great look at NYC in '39. I made my first trip to NYC in '58 with my parents and everything looked similar to that with the exception of newer cars and more skyscrapers. People were still well-dressed. I think the decline started somewhere in the '60's. I was back there in '74 and everything looked dirty and depressed by comparison. In recent times, things look better but the people do not.

 

Exactly what I saw about 1968...

In 1979 I asked my Oil engineer uncle what happened to them and he said that it was cheaper to get the oil from Saudi Arabia! I said... "You mean that we ran out of oil" referring to the 1973 oil embargo... He said "NO" it was just cheaper to import versus drilling here!

 

That was about the time of the second great oil "shortage" scam in '79 when they doubled the price again after learning they could get away with it in '73. "Cheaper from Saudi Arabia" indeed!

 

This video runs for 15 minutes, but is worth a look. Melbourne,Australia in 1910. Not many cars in the street then, but a few are shown.

What a great link - I was born and grew up in Melbourne. So many old buildings are gone and the place is unrecognizable. That is progress, I guess.
