Event Coverage Oilers CC Present: "Race of Gentlemen"

  1. Mel, Is there a firm date yet? I've just about got my better half talked into coming up with me. Gotta get a nice room. If I were able to come myself, the back of the Suburban would do just fine! :D

I talked to Mel on Saturday and there is no set date just yet. Waiting to hear back from the potential host towns.

  3. Got a copy of the Rodder's Journal....
My parents had actually made the trip down from Boston to see General Gow and I run. My father was a hot rodder in the 50's. He was also stationed at Fort Monmouth in the early sixties.

I didn't get to run, but I did get to spend the day with my parents, walking around and listening to my father reminisce about cars he drove, or drove against. I got to listen to he and my mom talk about dating while he was stationed there in NJ.

I paid the admission fee for them to both be on the beach, but after a while the sand was too much on old joints, and they found a bench on the boardwalk with a great view...

I can't describe how special it was to open the Rodder's Journal, and find my parents in one of the photos on the beach....

I plan to run my 28 Zeppelin-Tailed Model A speedster this year, and good Lord willing they'll be able to make it down again. But either way I have the memories of an incredible day with them on the beach in New Jersey.

    Thanks again Mel for everything.

Someone posted this article by Carol Mittelsdorf written March 8th in Thunderpress on TROG facebook page. Check it out.
LOCH ARBOUR and ALLENHURST, N.J., Oct. 19–20–When we think of tank-shifted motorcycles racing on the beach, nostalgic images of pre-war Daytona Beach come to mind. That simple combination of beach, bikes, bands, bonfires and a day of drag racing with your buddies was only a memory of days gone by until Oilers Car Club President Mel Stultz of Neptune, New Jersey, had the concept of recapturing some of this nostalgic mojo with the inaugural Race of Gentlemen. He pitched his idea of an eighth-mile drag race on the beach at the Jersey Shore to mayors Dave McLaughlin of Allenhurst and Rob Fernicola of Loch Arbour. The race would feature pre-1934 cars and American-made pre-1950 tank-shifted bikes. Much to his surprise, both mayors enthusiastically agreed, allowing Mel’s dream to become a reality. Finally got some of my film souped and properly scanned. Click the above for my blog post. I shot this on kodak tri-x which was released in 1954 with a early 50s Rolleicord twin reflex to keep with the theme of the day.

  9. Where is the best place to stay? I'm gonna book a hotel now, then cancel if the race doesn't happen.

There is no set beach yet this year so campgrounds and hotels are impossible to suggest at this time. I'm pretty sure its not going to be in the same spot as last year. What's the word Mel?? Wherever it is, I will be there for sure! haha

  11. This just in... October 4,5, & 6 are our dates to run!!!

Location for the 2nd Annual Race of Gentlemen... Wildwood, NJ. Sometimes know also as the Wildwoods!

We had hoped for our same date, but this is the date they gave us. We are happy!!!

Plenty of hotels. And best yet, a rock hard beach. So wide the tide will never contend. Wahoo, lets race!
