This thread has made me realise just how much of a NERD I truly am. Who else can name every aircraft on the last 4 pages without having to look them up?

I gotta get me one of those life things I keep hearing about!

Doc, that's great. When WW-whatever comes next, I want you on my side doing friend and foe IDs, and clearing up any confusion on what incoming bogeys pose the most threat. Besides, those dammed Jane's volumes are just too big to lug around and hard to keep dry in foxholes! Gary

I would hate to have to figure out where each wire went on that mess.

  15. A book titled "The Age of Edison" just hit the streets. It tells about the impact that the electric light had on everyone's life in the early years. In those early days there was no coordination between the telephone co.'s and the power providers and the municipalities. Wires had little or no insulation and were tacked to anything that would hold them. The picture we look at here is unusual in that it is neat and organized. The book is a real eye opener on a time in the early years of the industrial revolution when almost no activity was regulated to assure safety.

Southurn that is an incredible picture, never seen anything like it. Any idea on its original location?

Some great pictures here the last few days. Thanks as always to everyone for sharing.

When we were kids we got this book that had Black on White silhouettes of the undersides of all the WW2 European aircraft from all the countries and my brother and I were looking up the letters on the page on the "cheat sheet" in the book when our Mom saw it and took one glance at it and started rattling off the ID's of every plane on the page, without a mistake.
We were kind of floored and floored again when she said she was trained as a spotter in the RAF during the war.

  18. Drove past this early powerhouse on the way to Rust Revival last weekend. This is an older pic of the powerhouse that was built between 1910 and 1913 adjacent to Lock & Dam number 19 along the Mississippi River in Keokuk, Iowa. It was the largest hydro-powered powerplant in the world when it was commissioned. It used to generate 25Hz electricity for the streetcars in St. Louis. It still stands today, and its an incredible sight.

How the hell did you find the pic's for a then and now of a power line??!! That's certainly not the type of thing you would expect to have many photos of!
Damn good work finding that, we are watching a master at work here!!

Deal, I will be your spotter, it's hard enough to keep yourself dry in most foxholes!! It was a lot of work to keep my medic kit clean and dry, but a book?? No thanks!

DrJ, that would be a 'trip' having your mum come out with aircraft IDs like that. I grantee she would have made me look like a dumb arse with her knowledge level!!

......and, to keep on track. This is the Commonwealth Aircraft Company (CAC) CA-13 Boomerang fighter. Designed, prototyped and the first aircraft was delivered for combat in just 22 weeks! It was realised with much of our front line aircraft already serving in Europe, when Japan attacked the U.S. there was a gap in air defence for Australia. We needed a 'stop gap' fighter to fill in until bothy CAC and DAP could tool up to produce better fighters.
Based heavily on the 'Wirraway' trainer they found a particular strength as a ground attack aircraft and served out the war in that roll once the Spitfire and P-40 entered service.
