Can't tell much. I found it for dirt cheap together with the Holley and a brand new exhaust mainfold for A and B engines, all overhauled and ready to install. It was lying in an old mans shop on the attic, he said it's sold, I left my number in case he had some more parts like that, a day later he called and said I could have it.

This dude has also a speed head with no markings. Might be a Police head, also cheap, thinking if I shall buy it or order a Lion head...

And the V8s are not really Jalopies.

Look at the combustion chambers of the speed head, if they are heart shaped and its cheap buy it. If you've been around the bangers long you know how many of these heads are cracked. If it says "speed head" on it it's a rare bird with an incredibly compression ratio.

I can't remember how the combustion chamber looks like... He wants the equvalent. of 200 Dollars as far as I remember.

I play with Hot Rods for about a year now. Not much knowledge here yet. Learning from smarter than myself, and by doin' it.

thats a little on the high side considering to use it you should send it to a machine shop and have it magnafluxed and decked. That usually cost $100+ as long as the head is good and not needing repairs.

Love this thread! Keep them coming!

  7. Yes, but when they used junk stuff in 1932 that would still make it traditional in todays eyes!

Well, depends, traditional stuff ain't so easy to find. Sure, anyone can whip out a credit card, but for me it's half of the fun getting hold of those things by hunting them down in cellars and attics.

Neglected, flat paint, dirty, most likley rusty here and there. Is it a Rat Rod? No Sir. It's La Cucaracha in her early days.

  10. Don't sweat the comments from the peanut gallery...those that see these pics and don't get it probably never will. Keep the jalopy pics coming!

    John Heckman likes this.
  11. While you girls argue, I'll just go out there and drive the wheels off of my truck. (See, I didn't call it a Jalopy, because it doesn't fit your 1932 or earlier category)

Well I'm not. But if the claim on this here very forum is to "spread the gospel", then I understand why christians back then were spreading their stuff with swords and violence. Because sure as hell I did read thru my first posts a gazillion times, and for the love of God, my english is not good enough to explain what a Jalopy is and why it ain't rat rods any easier than I did already.

  15. I'm sorry, man...

Here is what I was trying to say:
Lets assume you have a sock model A roadster. It is 1932 and you are using '32 parts to hop it up and modify it. Then you got a bad ass hot rod, or Jalopy like you are calling it here.

Second scenario. it is 2013 and you have a stock model A roadster. You are using parts from 2013 to hop it up and modify it. What you get is an ugly looking piece of shit that some would call a rat rod.

I'm out, back to posting cool pictures!

    Wikipedia=
During the 1930s the market for used cars first started to grow and decrepit cars were often a poor man's form of transport. Cheap dealers could obtain the cars for very little, make aesthetic adjustments, and sell the car for much more. Early hot rodders also purchased decrepit cars as the basis for racers, and early stock car racing was called banger racing in the United Kingdom and jalopy racing in the United States.
A jalopy was an old-style class of stock car racing in America, often raced on dirt ovals.[3] It was originally a beginner class behind midgets, but vehicles became more expensive with time.[3] Jalopy races began in the 1930s and ended in the 1960s.[4] The race car needed to be from before around 1941.[3] Notable racers include Parnelli Jones.[4]

Other than being a coupe, that's what I thought this site would be. But when I looked further, I saw all the variations of what folks THOUGHT a hot rod/jalopy was supposed to be.

A lot of what's been shown so far, are NOT what a kid would have built, but what a guy with a decent job and money would have built. I don't think this stuff got big, until GUYS/adults got home from the war.
