For everyday driven cars, I like the variety of lively sounds from a Chevy straight six 235 and 261 with dual cast iron headers and dual straight pipes without mufflers over the axle out under the bumper straight.
If you can't spell 'deceleration', you learn it quickly after hearing it in this way.

But WW2 and earlier aircraft engines are my favorite engines sounds - no contention.

I'm a sucker for some inliners, the Ford GAA v12's sound pretty amazing, and of course the standard 'ol bellbutton SBC is hard to beat and easy to find.

I can't beleive not one mention of the fine sound of the 45 degree V twin, Harley Davidson! Now that is an iconic sound from the 20s to the present.

Perhaps we've just heard it too much. Not the engine's fault, though.

Thereby hangs a tale: I wonder if the extremely ugly VW-powered Amazonas motorcycle was still being made in Brazil at the time HD were describing their engine sound as "potato potato" in their attempt to copyright it. We all know what a Beetle engine sounds like: "spud spud spud spud ..."

    Seriously,

    • any seriously-cammed American pushrod V8;
    • any flathead Ford V8 including a stocker; but also:
    • Subaru EJ
    • Porsche air-cooled six
    • Audi 5-cylinder
    • many 2-stroke diesels e.g. Detroit, Commer TS3
    • Ducati V-twin
    • classic British vertical twins e.g. Triumph T120/T140

Many people like the sound of a BMW six, but it sounds like a garden hose to me.

It's pretty much the same formula as the classic British twin, on a smaller scale. Even so it doesn't sound like 305cc. Still, the CB450 Black Bomber sounded that little bit nicer:

    Agreed.

12 cyl. racing engine at hi rpm. Or when the V10 F1 cars were running at Indy backwards. Sitting in the the front straight at Indy during practice for the 2001 F1 race. The cars were full throttle all the way from the last turn onto the straight.

Factory spec, Ford HiPo 289, with solid lifters and exiting through an Arvinode exhaust system.
(rare exhaust built excusively for the HiPo)

Man, that's a good call! I'm of the other camp, but the old man bought a new '65 2+2 HiPo (I was 11 at the time) and that thing had a (great) sound all it's own. I remember the duals had little turn downs right under the rear splash pan. May be the exhaust you mention, it sounded damn good!

Hamb friendly would be a solid or roller lifter cammed v8. Just the way the idle dances is like music. Non hamb friendly a hayabusa with a huge crank large very large cams a sidewinder exhaust still running efi. I've never seen so many people drop what they were doing to watch the busa my friend owned go by in the pits.
