The Grand Ascent is happening again this coming Saturday the 15th. That will be followed by the concours on Sunday. This is a very cool show and fantastic opportunity to see some very nice vehicles. The Grand Ascent is really fun with all sorts of vintage stuff roaring up the hill. There is a very nice trail just next to the track so you have the opportunity to see and hear the cars in a number of good spots. noboD volunteered last year, You going again? regards ken http://theeleganceathershey.com
Probably not. I start night shift tonight, BAD luck. I will be there Suday AM for a short time, hope to run into you. There's a good lineup of cars, including a local Pierce. It was once owned by Milton Hershey.
I'll be shooting the concours all day. I'm 6"3, pony tail and glasses. I'll have 3 cameras strapped on. Looks like the weather will hold up for both days. regards ken
I'll be at the Grand Ascent on Saturday, like last year. I really like this event. Here's a few of my favorites from last year.
We raced sports cars for several years back in the early 60's at Hershey. We went back and spent some time there about a year ago with Ron Mann the historian for the P.H.A. It was always a real fun hill climb.
We ran a Formula V and a ex Sebring Sunbeam Alpine. you are right it was a blast. After 50 + years I forgot how narrow it was. The best part was going over the bump at what you might say was the end of the straight and getting slowed down enough to make the sharp left. Ahhhh the memories !
Old Dawg, I don't want to hog up Ken's thread but got any pics? I live about 1 1/2 mile from the hillclimb/park/flea market/show field. I can hear the cars running today, JUST like it was '67. I went to most all the hillclimbs back then.
i've asked my girls for a trip to the elegance on sunday.. weather permitting.. thats where I'll be..
For Ken and anyone else that was there, did you notice if Wayne Carini was there with his Rutan VW hill climb special. He had the car there last year. He is supposed to be driving again this year and I wondered if he brought the VW. Thanks.
He was there today, is supposed to be honorary chairman of the hillclimb. Sawzall, I'll see you Sunday.
Can someone get pics of Carini's VW hill climb special,I can't make it out there this weekend. Some shots of the interior and engine would be great! Thanks.
I remember Bill running that car back in the day. He was nuts (that's good)and quick. If you want to see pictures log on to the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association web site. Note to noboD I' pm you when I can with some photos.
Thanks for sharing the photos. That looks like a great weekend event to go to. I added a few of the photos to my "boat tail inspiration" file too as reference.
What an awesome low-slung sports car - I could see this as a Model A based channelled hot rod - big n little plies on A style wires - hmmmmmmmmm Damn my imagination!!!
Ken, You didn't happen to get a photo of Frank sitting on top of the straw bales in the blue 57 Corvette on Saturday did you. His throttle stuck and he went for a wild ride. Dave
Well Ken, we managed to avoid each other again. Do you realise how many ponytailed camera guys there were? I even resorted to asking. We will hook up sometime, look forward to seeing your pics, hint hint. Hope you got a good pic of Kim's Gardner dashboard. That in itself defines elegance.
I took nearly 4000 photos over the 2 days of Hershey. Between that and kids and family and work, its been tough to find the time. With that said, I'll start off with a few pictures of Wayne's car, from last year. He broke on Friday. But, with different tires, ran 4 seconds faster on Friday till he broke. The next set of photos are of the 500cc powered Norton special. Crowned the loudest car of the event by the corner workers. regards ken
few more shots from sunday, I'm still going thru my 4000 shots and processing as I go The first shot is of the ultra cool 37 Talbot Lago T-150SS. Such a sexy car. Neat lines from above. The second and third are of the judges pick for best of show. A somewhat surprising choice of a non-restored vehicle. Of course it is one of the most sought after cars in the world, the 38 Alfa Romeo 8c-2900B spyder. A very sexy and fast for its time car. Then there is the 53 Jaguar C Type from the Simeone Museum. Should you be in Philadelphia, the Simeone Museum is a must see, if you like unrestored, regularly used, original condition race cars spanning automotive history. http://simeonemuseum.org Then there is the 55 D type from the Taylor collection. I took many pictures of this car.
That Bugatti is awesome, basically taking all hot rod cues for chopping and channeling and louvering. A wonderful build done out on the eastern shore of Maryland.
I managed to get a few pics before my camera battery died. The Allard was Cad-powered and sounded good.
Anybody know what this is? It sounded very smooth and I think it had a Jag XK120 DOHC inline six but I'm not sure. I took this pic w. my cell phone.
