Well, I'm back to bring you some more shots from British Columbia. In the seventh picture, that's actor Raymond Burr, wearing the cloak. His family homestead is just down river from New Westminster, at Deas Island.

As much as I appreciate Jimmy Stewart's accomplishments as an actor, my first thoughts of him are of his service in the Army Air Force during WWII and later in the Air Force Reserve. He enlisted voluntarily in March, 1941 - nine months BEFORE Pearl Harbor and just three weeks after winning the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in “The Philadelphia Story”. Rumored to have been rejected by the Navy for being too skinny, he went to fly for the Army as he was already a civilian pilot. In the following two years he served stateside in various flight instructor roles and rose to command a training squadron by July, 1943. Always concerned his celebrity status was keeping him "safe", he repeatedly requested combat assignments and was eventually given command of the 703rd Bombardment Squadron, a B-24 Liberator unit shipping-out to England in the fall of 1943. This was the most deadly period of the war for U.S. bomber crews (P-51s were not on-line yet) and the Germans usually went for the B-24s first instead of the B-17s if they had a choice. The 703rd flew their first combat mission (with Stewart piloting the lead aircraft) to bomb the U-Boat pens at Keil, Germany on December 13. Stewart eventually flew 20 combat missions and earned the Distinguished Service Medal, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, and four Air Medals. After WWII, he rose to the rank of Brigadier General in the Air Force Reserves and flew one B-52 combat mission over Vietnam on February 20 1966 (he was 58 years old at the time). During his active times in the reserves, he was qualified to pilot the B-36, B-47, and B-52 which were the largest bomber types ever flown by the Air Force.

So don't think of him as 'ol George Bailey, think of him as Jimmy Stewart, hard-ass American War Hero...
