I picked up a 1935 NOS Ford wish bone today for my highly modified 52 RPU(with original part tags WOW!!). I hate to cut it but that is it's future. My question for the HAMB... Have you guys seen or have any great ideas on mounting them to a F1 truck axle? I did a search with no results. This project is on a slim budget so what I got is what I got. The rusted radius rods (pipe) in the picture were for mock-up only. No it aint a RAT ROD![IMG]

It looks like its on its way..... Not sure what you're doing here. How do your springs attach, how will you run a split bone parallel to the spring to keep caster from changing during travel? Steering box? What is going on in the rear? A 52 rpu? I dunno......

That brings a new meaning to "SUICIDE" front end.

you could drill another hole and use another set of mounts like your springs just turned up right.

Normally, the guys who run an axle like yours use the two flat plates with four holes in them to bolt on adapters to bolt the wishbones to. But you have removed yours, it looks like. You can weld some brackets to the axle to hold the radius rods but I wouldn't sacrifice a nos set of bones to do that. You could just as easily make them from 3/4 inch tubing with heim ends on the front and rod ends on the back. With that quarter eliptic setup you only need one more bar at the top per side to control the axle, the spring will act as the lower controller.

You might contact Ron Pope on here (RPM) he makes a lot of custom brackets and other parts for guys at a very reasonable cost.

Uhh................I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a '52 RPU sitting flat on the pavement is the very definition of Rat Rod. Dont forget the spider web gussets and mailbox air cleaner to complete the look.

It's not "another not so traditional question"...it's the SAME exact question!
Heres the same exact answer I gave on your last question! :D:D

I'd just get an early Ford axle and the wishbone will bolt on...as will your spindles and brakes...and it will also be the right width.
As for drop, I don't think you will even notice the difference...and it might actually give you a bit better height once the engine and body get mounted.

I think you are trying to reinvent something for no good or practical reason. That always adds up to more work and often less than spectacular looks.

Don't complicate your build...it's off to a wicked start by the looks of it!

Yup...I think it is RPM that has cut plates available to weld to the axle web...although it really isn't that hard to create your own.
Still...if you buy his hairpins its just as well to get the plates at the same time.

Really? You're going to sacrifice a nos 35 bones for that? Really? Please don't.
I really don't understand why you think you need "traditional" split bones on that frame. It is what it is and no part of traditional style is going to help it be any different. Be creative and fab up some type of radius rod. Judging from what I see I think you need to address some safety concerns and I really hope you have a good understanding of suspension/ steering design since you have opted to do something out of the norm. I have to admit, picturing a 52 cab with the roof cut off on that frame is way too rr to me, shiny paint or not. Maybe your on the wrong forum.

Here we go... the frame will sit 4" high off the road on a 114" wheel base that will be fne. I had a suburban with the same clearance and my wife used it daily. I sure dont want a pissing match on style of my hot rod. As for the spider webs thats a ratical idea.

  11. I suggest taking it apart and starting over,,that set up is gonna hurt someone. HRP

Putting paint on a ratrod does not change the fact that it is a ratrod. 4" off the road is undriveable. Crap like this will draw attention from authorities and will result in a ban on ANYBODY working on their own car

Maybe this is the wrong site. I had no idea a build or the unfinished product could be judged to this dagree with a mocked up frame.

Best bet might be to go with your earlier styled axle and adapt the good brakes off the f-1. At least that way you get some use out of the parts you already have

I have to agree with that 100% You can call it anything you want an paint any color you want but it's still a rr when it's all said and done.

What's the problem with attention from authorities. This is hot rodding daddy-o. 2"to 4" off the ground is where a car looks good at. If you can drive it without air bags at that height then your doing something right. Johnny law doesn't like blue dots either, too many run in with the law just means you need more HP to get away from them.

  22. Take a little time to brush up on history,,because of all the wrecks and racing back in the day on city streets hot rods were not favorable in the public eye,,to drive a hot rod was asking for a ticket,,the police always found a violation.

As much as I hate to admit it street rodding played a big part in changing public attitude,,but in the minds of the public but also with the law enforcement,,NSRA was in the forefront promoting it as a family hobby and policing the cars with a optional safety inspection.

Today hot rods are sociable excepted because guys try and build cars that are safe but at the same time fun to drive.

The rat rod movement of thrown together over the top shock value is a step toward reversing the good press hot rods & customs have gained in the last 40 years.

There is nothing traditional about this setup. HRP

So, you're gonna out run the fuzz in a '51 Plymouth over ride height issues? Smart, good plan.

Please sell the NOS wishbone and buy a set of bones that are already split. There are lots of split bones on the market. Corndog has a set right now on the parts classified. You can make money on the deal and feel good about not destroying an original part for no good reason.

I disagree on the ride height. I think 4" of clearance is drivable as long as your roads aren't crap.

You are not wrong. It's spliced. You can see the welds.
