Friday we're heading out for the Lincoln Highway (Rt. 30) tour across the midwest, to Kearny NE. Just the place to spend the 4th of July, right?;)

We're packing up the Spartan Manor, hitching it to the Diamond T 201, and heading for Ashland Ohio, meeting up with 24 other Tin Can Tourists, and caravanning from there towards Kearny, the mid-point of the first Coast to Coast highway.

If you'd like to follow along, and not actually travel two lane roads through Iowa and Nebraska, you can ride shotgun at Cool McCool's Garage, where we'll keep a daily journal of all the excitement!

We have been given the task of finding attractions for the group to visit between Boone, IA, and Blair, NE. Big surprise, there is just not much there! I did find a couple brew pubs, and some wineries, a bridge or two, and a train trestle where there was ALMOST, thanks to some woman in sensible shoes, a horrible train wreck a century and half ago. Pretty exciting stuff!

Anyone with any options besides drinking Iowa wine and micro-brewed beer while gazing at train trestle, feel free to let me know!

I used to live right off the Lincoln highway in Irwin, Pa and never knew the history until I saw that PBS TV documentary on it a few years ago. Very interesting.

Have fun and give us lots of pictures. :)

Tama, Iowa had a neat roadside diner, and a pretty cool bridge with the words "Lincoln Highway" built into the railings.

Where are you all stopping in Iowa? I am just south of 30 a bit and would mind catching up with you if I could. Maybe make a few calls and see if we could round up some hot rods.

We're stopping on Boone, on the 27th, staying at the Boone Co. Fairgrounds. There's no official open house, but HAMB hot rodders are welcome to stop by and say hi.

Touring, I can't say where we'll all be during that day, as everybody is free to do and see whatever they choose. We'll be gathering at the fairgrounds mid to late afternoon though, and places to eat or your favorite watering hole info would be appreciated!

I should say that during the stay in Kearny (which untill now I didn't know was pronounced "Carny", like the carnival worker) from 6-29, through July 5. We're at the Buffalo Co. Fairgrounds there, and guests are welcome on the 3rd from 4-7 for the official open house. Hope to see some of my HAMB friends, or even people I've insulted over the years, there!

Kearny was the name of some noted General (Civil war? Revolutionary war? War of 1812?) who got a town named after him. Who knew?

  21. Don, I live in lovely Irwin Pa! I think there's more red lights on 30 in the stretch of Irwin than anywhere else in the whole country. Haha

Heavy, heavy rains today in Iowa. Flooding on 30 near Lowden for sure. Many businesses and houses under water. Hope you guys are able to dodge the storms safely. More rain and tornado warnings coming. Hope it is all cleared out for you guys when you roll through.
