And to further define it, Pat wrote the following in his editorial in the August, 1977 issue of Street Rodder:

"...but what ever happened to all those other street-driven 'mild customs' that were so prevalent in the late fifties and early sixties? And by mild customs I mean smooth, clean, low street machines with frenched headlights, tube grills, perhaps a frenched aerial or a louvered hood, definitely with all excess chrome and handles removed. Paint would be simple and straightforward--usually a solid metallic or candy color like Pagan Gold or Lime Green or Tahitian Red or Burgundy."

He went on to extoll the virtues of low-cost builds, including '54 Bel Airs and '56 Buicks, that are still way cool. I can't find the same image of Tom Jeffries Merc that was in his editorial, but here's a different shot of the same car.


Of course, he also qualified his opinion by saying "...[p]erhaps my taste is peculiar."
