Features The Official [Ed] Winfield Speed Equipment Thread!

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by gwhite, Jul 3, 2013.

  1. The exploits of Ed Winfield are legendary; at 11, he stripped down the family Model T and ran it to 60 mph while the folks were out of town; at the age of 16, he milled his motorcycle's head with a hand file, reground the cam, and reshaped the intake port to achieve higher performance; by 19, he was grinding his own cams and scratch built his own carburetor. His 1928 entry into the "World's Fastest Ford" challenge is the stuff of legends - his flathead 2-up, 2-down T dusted off the 'big boy' OHVs, leading Art Chevrolet to exclaim "I'm looking at it, but I still don't believe it!" Ed Winfield's carburetors dominated at Indianapolis in the 1930's - 9 of the top 10 finishers in the '30 race used Winfield 'S' carburetors and his cams were highly sought after by dry lakes runners through the 1940's.

    So since we've got threads on Cyclone, Hildebrandt, Stewart-Warner, Offy, Edmunds, Cragar, et. al., why not a thread dedicated to products made by "the father of hot-rodding"? So fellas, show us your Winfield stuff!

    I'll get us started with some of Mr. Winfield's early creations (unfortunately these don't belong to me)...Here's a 2-up, 2-down crank for a Model T;

    This will be a great thread! Nice to see it start with a photo of the Two Up Two Down with Ed and Chris. I still have the first WINFIELD intake I bought back in the late 1960's and the last SR I bought from Mike Hart. No date on the SR instruction sheet, tape discolored it, but you never pass on WINFIELD stuff if you can afford it. Bob

  4. Sweet! I noticed my intake is stamped "B" to match the carb...the intake opening looks larger on yours than mine - what size you got there?

    This is a great idea. Thanks for including video of my roadster in it.

  7. Here's what my carb looked like before;

    winfield carb.JPG

    I was scared to death to scrub with anything more abrasive than a well-worn soft bristled toothbrush and pipe cleaners. I found that full-strength "green cleaner" from the local pharmacy cleaned up the bronze plated body better than I could have hoped. A couple hours in white vinegar and a light oiling with CLP got the steel parts nice & clean. I've debated on removing the 'patina' (don't kill me for using that word) by giving the carb a good polish - but the plating is thin in a few spots & I don't think it'll look as good.

  9. I was hoping it would be okay...I'm looking forward to a full road test report & tuning details! Is your carb a BB or a C?

    BB, intake is stamped BB also.

    I have one more intake that's stamped B and one more carb, an SR-AA updraft.
    Should do some tuning tomorrow. Wanted to get some kind of muffler on it before my test runs ticked the neighbors off. Haha.

    Just checked and it has a "B" stamped on it.

  12. This is my Winfield equiped roadster. Original 6-1 head, intake and BB SR carb. Would love to find a intake like the one in the other photo but in all the years I have been looking I have never seen a dual intake with the Winfield name on it. I believe this one is a Cragar.

    Cool roadster. Another yellow head with an SR- BB!
    Love the dual Winfield manifold in that picture.

    There are fakes out there but they just don't look like the real thing.

    I got this from an old friend after he died...... it hung in my workshop and now in Poland. People keep waiting for me to die and come buy it from my wife. She has never sold anything!! And doubt she will ever have to.

    The real signs almost look like samples...... and maybe Ed looked at them and said "I'm not buying any more crap"

  18. Amen to that! Not sure how many 'yeller heads' were produced but I'd imagine they're pretty rare today. We need to get these cars together in one place!

    My head is #227 [6227]

  20. Here is a new casting of an original Riley intake for dual Winfields. This one still needs machined. The throat holes are 1 5/8 so perfect for two BB carbs. Other than heads, intakes, carbs and cams you really don't see much Winfield stuff.

    In later years Winfield designed and ground a cam for Meyer-Drake for the 270 Offy.
    They called it the #4. It was for short track dirt racing. Later on, Iskenderian copied the grind
    with slight modifications and called it the 404 for the flathead Ford V8. One of the most successful cams Iskenderian had.
    I like the #4 because in the same engine it makes the same hp as the 404 except it is easier on the valve train.
    I have used the #4 in flathead Ford 4 bangers also and it was a winner.
    Winfield had many grinds for the flathead V8 Fords but none were big hp getters. They are very popular today for street cams.

  22. I stole this from Zach Suhr's photobucket;

    [IMG]

    Pat Campea circa 1937...looks like a "Red Head" - Note how the Winfield heads use a wider spacing between plugs 1&2 and 3&4 than stock.

    And an article announcing the Red & Yellow heads in the Jan 18, 1931 Pittsburgh Press;

    Single barrel 2 bolt to Winfield B adapter.

    Two bolt flange is way bigger than A/B intake.

  27. Bought them all today as a lot. They were the guys dad's. The head is a cast iron Super Winfield, it was painted red. Unsure of compression ratio as it looks like it was ground off. Two cams look like pretty steep ramp profiles. Don't think they will be usable. Winfield intake and two carbs a SR and a S. He had a yard full of early ford dirt track cars in various states of decay. I didn't take enough money. I am going back soon.
