Still awaiting arrival on the new dizzy from bubba...so I figured I'd address some other issues. My steering was not correct. I used factory model a spindles and the steering went under the frame and on top of the wish bones. After I dropped my car 4 inches, it hits the bottom side if the chassis over bumps.. So I called my buddy Dave and got a set of 37 spindles and a bolt on steering arm, plus a new drag link. THis will make it go under the wish bones and I will not have any clearance issue. I did make a gusset for the bolt on arm and tig welded it in. I've herd alot about them flexing. Hopefully my new tie rods will be in today and I can get this all assembled. It should handle alot better now

Made it to the 4th of July picnic . Dave Beightol ( which is the gentleman i got my engine from) brought his blue coupe. I Was very glad to see him there. He offered to let me take it for a drive.. And of course you have to twist my arm to make me do something like that ! :). So I took It down the winding roads of rockland and kennerdale area. What a blast! That car is the best driving vehicle I've ever had the opportunity to ride in let alone drive! It was a great experience . After driving it he told me I was the only guy he has ever let drive that car ! That was a good feeling . Here is a few pics from the day

I was not able to make any progress on getting this car running good at all. Here's what I am running into....

I replaced the dizzy with one from bubbas. Bolted it on the car, it wouldn't barley even start. When it did, the timing was so retarted that it puffed black smoke and sounded like I was pulling a semi truck up a hill... Terrible . So I had no choice but to advance the timing a few degrees. So I did just that... Score! It ran great... Now the throttle was sluggish. Meaning that when I pulled out on the road it had no power as If it was taking forever for the timing to advance. When it finally did, it would take off like a Rocket, very impressive ... At an intersection you had to rev it pretty high to get it to move along, then once it was rolling you had to very gently ease into the throttle or it would just spit and pop and cough. But if you eased into it, it would lite and take off like a rocket. .... Now after about 15 mins of drive time it would warm up to 150-170 and then run like s
Dog shit. So in my mind it was either a condenser or a coil ... So I replaced both. And backed the brake off just a hair.. It seemed great. 20 mins of drive time go by and it would just run like ass again... WTF! So back home we go. Popping and coughing, no power. So I got it home and installed the coil adapter kit on it. Remote located a brand new 6v coil with a brand new condenser on the dizzy, now it barley startes at all, no power at all, worse than before. Cannot even pull it out of the garage. So I put the helmet coil back on, bam! Starts good, runs good for a few mins then crap. Shut it off and let it cool, runs good again. I haw excellent fuel delivery, clean plugs, 90lbs compression across the board. Any ideas!? This super charger is about to find itself on a shelf....

When this happens, what is the voltage at the ciol? Could there be something causing high resistance when hot? Ign switch? Connection somewhere? It has to be something common to both dizzys. Also, what is your plug gap? I have an OT blown street car that is VERY fussy about plug gaps.

I checked the voltage and its 6v basicly. It matches the battery voltage. Plug gap is .027... I figured that to but I messed with bigger tolerances and it ran terrible

With the stock coils, pretty sure you need a resistor to knock the voltage down to 3.xx, can't remember the exact voltage.

That's the second time I've herd that.. But no one has ever actually proved it. Am I over powering the coil? Is that even possible? I've never had any sort of resistor in anything. What gets me is using the aftermarket remote coil it says right on the side" does not require external resistor "

The aftermarket one must be internally resisted. Stock V8 fords had an under dash mounted resistor.

It runs worse with the aftermarket coil.. Tomorrow the blower comes off. Single carb back on, old dizzy back on.

Damn, man, that's crazy talk. Let me give ya a resistor to try with the stock coil.

I know you're going for a period look, but is there a more modern distributor with a vac or mech advance you could play with? I don't know much about the early motors so the answer might be "no". Or maybe some method to manually control spark advance, again just to play with during tuning?

Also it may be bogging down as too rich at low RPM, can you set up the carbs sequentially?

P.s. just guessing mostly. Listen to the Ford gurus.

Another guy called me today who was having basicly the same trouble.. I will have to try the resistor, he said it cured his right up. In hoping that's all it is. !

6 volt system, 6 volt coil should not require a resistor. 12 v conversions need a resistor. The resistor protects the points not the coil. I think you said earlier that you checked/replaced the condenser.

BTW the Model A guys I run with have found several condensers bad right out of the box. Be sure you dont have a China one. They'll give you fits.

OK, you said you had battery volts there. Are the points OK?
