Yeah, all I can really take away from this thread is "wow, that would be a nice donor car". If it wasn't for idiots, it would be a lot harder to get a cheap donor car.
When I read this comment I started laughing. My shop used to be next to a towing companys impound lot. One Monday morning I came in, the tow co's rollback was sitting outside. On top of the rollback sat a smashed SUV, sitting on its roof yet. Seems the "new" driver went to the seen of the wreck and just winched the rolled over SUV that was still sitting on its roof onto the roll back. Then he took it back to the lot and let it sit all night still upside down on the roll back. Sure wished I would have taken pictures. LOL THAT was an incorrect rollover recovery. As far as the drunk driver and his vette, the sad truth is he probably will not get what he deserves, the next innocent victom of his drunk ass driving will. I no longer drink, so driving drunk is not an issue with me. When I read things like some of the comments on the Hundert Car Pile Up treads, I shake my head in disbelief. Even though all knew better, lots were still drinking and driving. If the Vette and its driver had been a duece coupe and a fellow HAMBer that had just left the Fools Bar, would the comments have been the same? Back in my drinking days, we would all drink at someones house. We collected the keys as you arrived, and you got them back in the morning. No one left drunk, we didn't have issues with the rules. Gene
75 %? Bullshit. I have no sympathy for people who drink and drive. And before anyone says "we're all guilty of it now and then"-no, we're not. I've lost a couple freinds and almost lost my sister to drunks. Fines need to be stiffer and so does jailtime. No excuse for this to keep happening everywhere. I saw something about california will crush your car if you get caught streetracing-- why not do that for drinking and driving? These people with multiple DUI's, can you imagine having to make payments on a crushed car? I bet that would get some of their attentions. I'm glad your freind is okay, but moreso that noone else was hurt.
I'm not necessarily defending the "guy",maybe he is a drunken dumbass, maybe he's not. I really couldn't say. I didn't say the #'s are 75% drive drunk,I said the #'s are 75% drink and drive. There is a difference there! No it's not just semantics! Is one or two beers drinkin'and drivin or is the #ten? There are plenty out there who would say 2 beers is not. Just for the record ,I think .08 BAC is to low to be fuckin' with people. That is to say that 2 beers inside 1-2 hours is enough to call most folks under 200 Lbs. drunk and some states want to lower that to .05 which is intolerable or 0 tolerance as it were(.05=DUI and .08=DWI).How many of you out there have gone out to dinner with the wife or girlfreind and or the buds and had a couple of drinks or glasses of wine with dinner or a few beers with your pizza or a marguarita or 2 with your mexican and then driven home? Consider this. Now you are on your way home and the person on their cell phone or getting on the kids in the back seat,or changing stations on the radio or just generally distracted by something that caught their eye (isn't paying strict attention), and blows the light or changes lanes into you . Enter Mister Gilmore AKA your friendly neighborhood cop, they make the scene and smell the alchohol on your breath and give you the breathalyzer test nd you pop .05 or more(and you will bust .05 having had anything to drink)you're ass is up shit creek without a paddle .The accident automatically becomes your fault, (whether it is in fact or not) ,because if you hadn't had a drink and then driven you would't have been there and therefore the accident wouldn't have happened ,Blah blah blah, never mind what the other person was or wasn't or shouldn't a been doin'. For the record that is most states veiwpoint on the matter. Make no mistake about it it happens alot more often than most would like to think. The most typical scenario is it's after 10 o'clock in the PM and you're on you're way home from a gathering of some sort, you've had a few and get stopped for a tail light or a tag light or a headlight or whatever the excuse to light you up may be and the next thing you know you are on your way to the pokey and higher insurance rates etc.. These are pretty typical scenarios in an "alchohol related arrests Someone driving home blind drunk from the bar or a gathering getting in a crash that kills or injures someone happens occasionaly, but far and away most alchohol related offences occur as mentioned above. I think even if the fella that wrecked his Vette popped a .08 BAC, that prolly isn't the direct cause of his crash.Prolly the more direct cause of his crash is prolly just fat tires, wet pavement and happy foot. Now before the rest of you rabid dogs out there start chewin' on me,stop and think how many times in the past you've punched it a little on a wet street to hang it out a little on a corner or curve or on perfectly dry pavement for that matter? Now,How Many Of You Have Ever Lost It,doin' it? It happens, drinkin' or not. So maybe before all the rabid dogs finish off the carcass maybe they should look a little at themselves. Most people don't build Hot Rods or drive Vettes just because they're purrrrrty. I have a tendency to think that people are way to quick to judge and run their traps/keyboards about stuff they have been/are guilty of themselves. So like my Gramma used to say before she left this world,"Sweep your own back doorstep before you go sweepin' any body elses". Enough with the liturgy I'm tired and I'm goin' ta bed. T.OUT
That guy in picture is thinking "Maybe I can just buff it out - that way my wife will never know".....
Not defending drunks either, all though I used to pick up quite a few (brother and sisters) when they'd get pulled over. I heard that getting less than 5 hours of sleep was the equivalent of driving drunk. Another heads up during allergy season-ever read the antihistamine bottle? Those things f@ck me up and chase it with a beer or two? Fugehdaboudit!
Glad he didn't hurt anyone else! It's one thing for a car to get away from you under "normal" conditions; weather and awareness. It's ANOTHER when the idiot is intoxicated. Guys like him make me want to drive an amored truck when I'm hauling my family........shoot, even for me.....I support them!!! Tell your buddy thanks for taking the emergency workers away from someone that really needs them......and for wasting my tax dollars!
What he said! What kind of logic is that? If everyone doing it, then it's ok! Well, MOST of the world drives newer cars.....you gonna swap that hot rod of yours for a late model......everyone else is doing it.......come on......just a little... Come on dude, be real here.....serious....
DUI laws these days are quite severe. We know a gal that got her third DUI and spent mandatory four months in jail. She said she'd kill herself before going to jail again. Drunk driving is indefensible and don't find out by getting pulled over how severe the laws are these days. Second offense in CT is a month in jail and suspended licence for a year. My next DUI will ruin my life. I've learned my lesson. Hope some of you learn from my lesson too. -85%
Bullshit. I guess your father wasn't run over and killed by a drunk truck driver on his way to work at 8:30 in the morning when you were 13 following along behind him in your mom's car on your way to school..... Fuck drunk driving. I sure hope he learned his lesson. Maybe next time he'll kill himself and do the rest of us a favor.
one of my senior drivers (going back to the towing topic) is a 53 yr old red&white member (if ya know what i mean) and he is hands down the biggest smart assed muther fucker i have ever met. from time to time when the scrap metal yard wont send the tractor trailers to pic up our crushed cars cuz they are busy, my driver will load them like a mad man just to piss off the guy working the claw at the metal yard. one time he was taking a older ford econoline 19 pass van, he climbed up on top of the van, and hacked the roof out with a axe, and wedged 3 mid 80's honda crx's inside it! all this at the yard, then put a truck on the wheel lift end of the tow truck and stuffed a mazda rx-7 upside down in the bed. now this may not seem too funny to you guys, but watching him do this in OUR YARD loading up these cars with the biggest fkn smile on his face, knowing that he was gonna piss of the guy at the metal yard, then to see it all drive down the road.....priceless! needless to say ever since he used to do that, if they tell me they are too busy to come get them, i say" thats ok...i'll just send my drivers down with the cars" they haved been "too busy" since! keep in mind these cars WERE NOT CRUSHED when sent over...lol
Yo Baby- You may not be talking semantics (I think you are with the .05 dui, .08 dwi business), but it seems to me like you are trying to justify date rape by saying, "Oh, he was just flirting with her." If you drink and then you drive, you are impaired. It really is that simple. And the fact that 75% of the population does it (if the numbers really are that high) doesn't make it OKAY. "Well you know, this guy down the street chopped his mom's head in two with an axe. I just shot my brother in the stomach, so it's not that bad." Give me a break. The guy was drunk. He rolled his car. He got what he deserved. Thank God in heaven he didn't kill someone else in the process.
10% 0f fatal crashes in my neighborhood were DWI's last year. I'm much more worried about that 90% of dumb sonsO'bitches who were too stupid to be on the road! I figure if the state was so worried about the publics' well being they would establish a minimum I Q for drivers. You can all carp about DWI all you want but statistically you are more likely to be killed by DUMB.
I think the issue is that you can't help being a dumb son of a bitch, but you can not drive after you have drinking.
Wait a second..... You're taking ALL other fatallities comparing them to the 10% drunk (we'll assume 10% is accurate). I want to see the #'s broken down; people that killed themsevles from DUMB driving and people that are KILLED by DUMB drivers. And, still, you are comparing people that runn off the road by trying to miss a dog, deer that come through the winshield, not paying attention to crossing gates, a bus blows up and kills 100 kids.......see, it skews the data. Just let a drunk kill someone in your family and come back and tell us how you feel. I'd bet you'd feel differently if an 80 grandma of 25 great, great grand kids killed somone in your family- compared to the drunk killing somone in your family. Do you drink and drive? Do you think it's ok? EDIT: don't get all blown away with my comments......just casually discussing the issue.....
Are you saying I should feel better if Grandma kills my family instead of some drunk? and where did my comments Endorse drunk driving? Charlie
I dont really see what all this has to to with Traditional Hot Rods or Customs. And neither does the wrecked heap of plastic at the top of this Thread...
Back in the day, some of us who were in to model cars, would build a really bitchin plastic car, then set it afire and try to get a really boss photo of it burning. All of that pitch black smoke don't you know, and the melting, and the stink.... That's about the time I developed my opinion of plastic cars. pigpen
Glad nobody was killed but if i had a vette i pray it got wrecked so i could collect the insurance money and buy a hotrod.
My wifes parents were both killed this year by a drunk driver. He hit their van head on,which caused it to flip over and burst into flames. They were trapped and died a horrible death. The drunk died instantly.I hope there`s a hell.
I totally agree with this. You mis-understood what I was saying. What I was getting at was that late model cars are easy to drive...so there should be no excuse for not being a perfect driver. The problem we are having is because it is so easy, people don't feel it neccessary to totally focus on driving while they're behind the wheel. You shouldn't be doing anything behind the wheel except driving. I'm guilty of drinking soda (from a sealed bottle so i won't be distracted by an accidental spill) and smoking cigarettes while behind the wheel. I'll fess up to that. And I don't drink. I play music in clubs and bars a minumum of 5 nights a week, and looking at and dealing with that many drunks is enough to keep anybody sober for good. And wannabe...your 94 Fleetwood must've been a pooch, cuz I've already had mine sideways (on purpose) in the rain. Maybe you never found the button for shutting off the traction control in the glove box. You can't do a brake stand with that shit on. You ever put Z rated tires on that big Cad? Z rated tires don't like wet. Anyway, I didn't come here to talk about late models...so lets go on with our lives....
I can't believe the mentality some of the people on this board have. I don't thick the 10% is right, last study I read it was 40%. Considering EVERY accident I've been in or anyone I know of has been in (except parking lot bumps and such) involved alcohol. (no, I wasn't drinking, the other driver was. A freind in college was posed to play professional soccer, because of a drunk he had to learn to walk again. Lucky for him they let him kkep his full soccer scholarship. A freind flipped his car end over end and survived (he was drunk and passed out). My sister t boned by a drunk pulling out onto a 65mph highway. I could go on. Yes, I have gone out and had a glass of wine at dinner, but I only have one and use the one hour rule. (and since I weigh 220 that's probably being overly cautious.) It's not that hard to use common sense. Designated drivers, taxis (why the hell are people too damn proud to call a cab?!?!) it's all very simple. As for a IQ test to drive-- pick out those that drink and drive and you've gotten rid of most of the low iq right there. I know the DUI laws are somewhat strict, but obviously not strict enough, since people keep getting multiple DUI's. I still think they should crush the car, that would be a wake up to most people.
Well James, drunk driving is not a problem for me. I don't drink, and never have. So I'm not part of the 75%. I wasn't raised around it and it just never interested me. If someone wants to drink thats fine by me, just don't drink and drive. Drunk drivers don't bother me as long as they just wreck their cars and kill themselves. But when they damage and kill others there is no punishment too severe. The fastest growing group of drunk drivers around here causing accidents is illegal aliens. They are never insured and almost never licenced. The anti-drunk driving campaign has worked fairly well here but accidents involving illegals are steadily increasing. Few seem to read and speak the language so road signs and traffic laws mean nothing to them. There are mangled cars and people to prove it. I'm not anti-alcohol or anti-immigrant, just anti-drunk driving and anti-ILLEGAL immigrant.
I don't drink either, never even had a sip. That being said, it still pisses me off that people can manage to drive drunk and fuck shit up. That, in turn, raises insurance costs for all of us, one way or another. Just like on another board I post on, some people were driving too fast in a sports car, and got into a wreck...so now they're automatically labeled "street racers", even though they were just driving too fast and acting like fucking morons. That, in turn, raises insurance costs for anyone driving a sports car. My dad bought a car from his good friend's brother-in-law about two years ago, because he had just gotten his 4th DWI. That's fucking ridiculous ! Anyway, he had to sell the car because they were finally going to put him in prison. Well, he didn't even make it that far....he fell over the third story banister at his house and landed on his fucking head, splitting it open, killing himself (not intentionally of course, but he did it to himself). I feel bad that he had to die that way, but then again, I also don't. I don't know if it's just because I have never drank before, or what, but I just don't get it. What is it about alcohol that you have to put everything else in your life, ultimately, including your life, second to getting drunk ? I lost my best friend a few years ago to him being drunk. He didn't die, but he is a completely different person. You fucking hang out with someone for 15 years of your life, everything they do, you do, and vice versa, and they just decide one day that they want to change everything. Fuck 'em. -Aaron
Obviously neither have you! My Corvette handles great in the rain! People often get in cars that they can`t handle and blame the car for something stupid that they did!
oilcan, your right on the money with illegals. The guy that hit my sister was uninsured, unlicensed, no green card having illegal. Blew three times the legal, too. Lucky for him he was deported right from the hospital (had some outstanding warrants or something. I'm not a racist, I hate all ignorant idiots the same, but it does seem like that segment is getting a higher percent of DUI's around here, too.
