Rust removal.......the miracle of molasses!

One question what do you do with the molasses when when you are finished using it?

How do you get rid of it and where?

It's all organic so it can go down the drain or water the yard sparingly.and possibly flush with fresh water after cos it's sticky stuff.

 

That is the neatest thing i have heard in a while.. going to save me a ton of money... so long Evapo Rust!

I've been soaking mine in Honey for over 30 years, haven't noticed any rust on it yet!

 

1) Ya gotta hose off the film that's left on the metal.
2) Just like any liquid make sure you hose it all out and blow it out completely w/air afterwards.
3) It didn't harm the original paint. See #2.

I just unscrewed the back panel of the tank and let it drain out on the ground. Didn't attract any critters at all.

 

I bet it would clean out a gas tank too...That is awesome...

 

whats the lifespan of the mixture once it is used first time?
Is it a pitch it out- start over situation or reuseable to a certain extent?

I've been using the same batch in constant use for over two years now! Takes up to three weeks to derust parts now.Was quicker in the beginning.

 

does anyone know if You use a pump & pvc to make a shower, if the molasses will still work? Im thinking a sump, withe a strong pond pump, to spray the mixture onto a complete car.

i have a question after awhile a black skum forms on the surface i have been using a piece of cheese cloth on a homemade to clean it out,is that skum the rust or some of paint that still on the part

For the most part, molasses won't take the paint off of parts. (At least, I've never had my concentration of molasses high enough for that to happen).

The skim that develops on top of the molasses bath is mold. Probably some dirt and rust mixed in, but mainly mold.

 

Hi ... If you want to speed the process up you can hang a couple a pipes in opposite corners and connect 12v battery charger on low...you must keep inspecting the parts every couple of hours or they will disintergrate....I used this method on my T parts (my avatar) took less than a day for same results as 6-10 days just laying in the bath......this is probally safer if you cant watch the derusting processs.....

 

Hi There is a photo of the cowl in "my albums" ...Track T ... have a look there is a photo with the cowl ..photo called ..setting up...this was before I dumped it in the tank .... another where the cowl is assembled with doors and tub sections after being in the tank....Cheers Doug

 

I"m a believer Been soaking my car for 1 1/2 weeks and it takes rust and it blasts off with a pressure washer. But it flashes quick and you need to get something on it quick. Bought WD 40 in a fog can hit it wipe it down, then steel wool and a rag. the smellier it get the better it works. And the deer like it too! The gas lid is on my spare cowl, its in the tank along with 4 '27 wires.

Heres my setup. I have a 300 gal. stock tank. I fill it with 10 - 3 1/2 gal pails of molasses @ $10 each and top it off with water. I can get 3 or 4 loads of parts cleaned before it starts to loose it's effectiveness. When I pull the parts from the tank, I hose them off with water (a pressure washer would be better) then brush them with a mix of 3 to 1 of prep and etch (from home depot). I also use a weed killer sprayer to spay the etch into cavities. The etch kills the flash rust and protects the parts from rusting. Etch is used to prepare a surface for painting. The tank would be better if it was square. 48"x60" by three foot tall would be about right. I've been doing this for about three years. all I know I learned from Jimmy B.

An additional note. I wash the parts off on the grass in my backyard as well as applying the prep and etch. I drain the used fluid into the sewer. It doesn't kill the grass or the dogs. When it gets old and starts to turn black it starts to get ripe then it time to change it. Norm

Is that safe for the environment? Is dumping the used mixture, something that would need to be checked on with the EPA or whomever?

 

I think that I just figured out how to get the rust off of my 37 dodge box. Has anyone ran into any problems with this years down the road, with paint sticking?

 

Nope. Everything you are dumping is natural and organic. The two main things being rust, and molasses.

If you spread the molasses around the gardens or bare patches of grass, it helps things grow. Though, it seems to kill the grass if you dump the whole bucket of molasses on one patch.
Dump it on your compost pile if you have one to help with bacteria growth and decomposition.

Molasses is used in animal feed, as well as human consumption.

 

Beet juice will do the same job. Though the molasses is cheaper and easier to find.

 

Has anyone tried this in those plastic 55 gallon drums? Any reason to think it would degrade the drum? How about metal 55 gal drums?
