    Great shots 29bowtie, I especially find this "high tech" wheel aligner pic interesting.
    The Manager and Mechanic seem to dig it too.

    It's a Bear unit and is correct for the period. It's basically a pair of turn plates. Caster and camber are read with a bubble unit with a magnetic base that's placed on the front spindle/drum with the bearing cap off. Toe is read with a bar and trammels.

    I spent many hours working with one of those.

    One of the better alignment shops just outside of Hartford CT still had one in use atleast about 8 yrs ago. Basic by todays standards but more than adequate for older suspensions on rear drive cars.

    Never had the chance to meet him. This my granddad on my dads side he was young when he passed.

    Salem brake and wheel in Salem OR still uses the same equipment , They are the go to show when all of the new stuff won't work. Family owned since the 30's. Chuck has forgotten more than most ever knew.

    (circa 1919???)


    I'm guessing the New York licence
    plate on the car is from 1919. Can
    anybody confirm?

    That's a "demonstration" or what we know as a dealer plate. Ford's representative in NYC at that time was Gaston Plantiff.
